OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Women's Tennis prepares for its first road test of the 2020 spring campaign, taking on No. 15 Michigan in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff. It will be the first ranked opposition for the Rebels this season. The Rebels could also see a ranked foe Sunday, with the possibility of facing No. 12 UCF. Utah rounds out the four-team field.
Hosted at the Varsity Tennis Center, the Wolverines serves as one of 15 regional sites for the nationwide event. The Rebels and Michigan square off at 10 a.m., with live streaming and scoring available in the links provided.
Saturday's winners will face off at 12 p.m. Sunday, with the consolation match held that morning at 9 a.m.
REBEL RECAP
Ole Miss enters the weekend unblemished, picking up a pair of wins Monday against Memphis and UT Martin. The ranked duo of seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova picked up two victories, including winning the final three games to secure the doubles point in a 7-5 comeback win. Janatova also registered two victories in singles play, while the rookie duo of Kelsey Mize and Victoire de Samucewicz each earned their first collegiate dual match wins in the 4-0 decision over UT Martin.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
Saturday will mark the first dual match of the season for Michigan, who hosted the Michigan Invitational last weekend, taking on competitors from Ohio State, TCU, and Tennessee. Michigan boasts two ranked individuals in No. 26 Giulia Pairone and No. 85 Andrea Cerdan.
Pairone is certainly no stranger to the Rebel lineup; she and junior Sabina Machalova, who carries a No. 48 ranking herself, faced off during the ITA All-American Championships this past fall, as well as facing off last spring in doubles during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Oxford. Pairone bested Machalova during the All-Americans in a thrilling three-setter, including an opening set tiebreaker.
THE REST OF THE FIELD
In addition to its team ranking of No. 12, UCF boasts two individuals and two pairings in the ITA/Oracle rankings. The Knights are 1-0 on the season after a 7-0 blanking of Cornell.
Utah enters with the best record on the weekend, already 5-0 in dual match play. The Utes took a pair of wins each from Southern Utah and Montana, and pulled off the 4-3 victory over Minnesota last Sunday. Utah boasts one ranked duo.
