Machalova Wins Big, But Rebels Fall 4-2 to No. 15 Michigan
1/25/2020 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Sabina Machalova picked up her third ranked win of the year and first of the spring season Saturday, but was unable to guide Ole Miss Women's Tennis, who fell 2-4 to No. 15 Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center and slip to 2-1 on the young season.
Machalova impressed, defeating the Wolverines' Giulia Pairone, ranked No. 26 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)'s Rankings, in commanding fashion, winning 6-3, 6-2. Machalova improves to 3-1 this school year against ranked foes, her one loss coming against Pairone in a grinding three-setter during the All-American Championships in October.
Ranked No. 48 herself, Machalova came out with momentum, picking up the first three games to set a tone she continued to control through the remainder of the match.
Also picking up a victory was Rebel rookie Kelsey Mize, who dominated on Court 5 with a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Mize led for most of the match, and finished right after Machalova to tie things at 2-2 and help Ole Miss threaten.
Things looked promising for the Rebels as Michigan looked to clinch with a 3-2 advantage. Seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova were still battling, with Janatova controlling her match up 7-5, 4-2.
Vrbenska, knotted up at deuce point, held serve to win the game and bring the second set score to 4-5 and looking to force a third.
Janatova remained in control, but was halted after Vrbenska surrendered a 6-4 second set and handed Michigan the 4-2 victory.
