OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Women's Tennis begins their 2020 spring campaign Monday, welcoming border rival Memphis and UT Martin to the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center, located along Manning Way.
The Rebels will begin the day with Memphis at 10 a.m., where free donuts will be provided to the first 100 fans. After Memphis and UT Martin battle in between, Ole Miss will take on the Skyhawks at 5 p.m.
Live stats will be available for both matches.
THE 2020 ROSTER
Ole Miss returns a largely veteran squad, led by seniors Alexa Bortles, Anna Vrbenska, and Tereza Janatova. Bortles was an All-American in 2018, while Vrbenska has lost just four times in SEC play over three seasons and Janatova led the Rebels last spring with an 8-1 SEC clip.
Also returning is junior Sabina Machalova, named the ITA Southern Region's Player to Watch for the upcoming season. She and Bortles paired up for a No. 17 ITA ranking this past fall, and Machalova enters the spring season ranked No. 48 in singles. Machalova delievered an impressive fall, taking home the UNLV Rebel Invitational title with a win over then-No. 10 Kenya Jones of Georgia Tech.
Sophomore Grace Anne Jones also returns, joined by freshmen Victoire de Samucewicz and Kelsey Mize. Mize joins the Rebels this semester as a five-star recruit, boasting multiple Top 50 rankings.
THE 2020 SLATE
Monday will serve as a warmup for the weekend, when the Rebels travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Rebs will begin the tournament against No. 14 Michigan, and could then face either No. 13 UCF or Utah.
Ole Miss hosts a SEC/Big 12 Challenge type weekend beginning January 31, welcoming Baylor and Texas Tech to Galtney Indoor. From there, the Rebs will get a few final tune-ups before beginning conference play, including a potential rematch with UCF in Orlando.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis enters Monday 0-1, after falling 5-2 to Arkansas on Saturday. The Tigers carry a wealth of experience on their roster, with three seniors and three juniors, two of which were the winners in the loss to the Razorbacks. Junior Alisha Reayer grinded out a three-set victory at first singles in the contest.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
UT Martin will face Memphis before taking on the Rebs Monday. The Skyhawks boast no seniors on their nine-person roster, but do carry three juniors to serve in leadership roles. UT Martin is an interesting position, as head coach Caitlyn Williams was just named head coach January 6.
