TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Ole Miss cross country looks to book its fourth straight trip to the national meet for the both Rebel men and women at the NCAA South Regional at Florida State's Apalachee Regional Park this Friday morning.
The key prize for teams running in the nine NCAA Regional meets across the United States on Friday will be the top-two automatic qualifier spots to the national championship, which this year will be hosted at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. The next four individual finishers not attached to either of those two qualifying teams also earn trips to the national meet as an individual runner.
An additional 13 at-large teams and a variable number of additional individuals are chosen through a national selection process within a day following each regional meet. The top-25 finishers at each regional earn All-Region honors.
The No. 11 Rebel men will be looking for their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after repeating as SEC Champions two weeks ago. Ole Miss will enter as the men's favorite heading into the 10K race as the top-rated team in the South Region ahead of No. 15 Middle Tennessee and No. 28 Alabama.
Ole Miss has won the South Region title three times in the last five seasons, the most recent being a dominant 47-point win over host Florida State in 2018. The Rebels will run four of the six All-Region honorees from that 2018 squad in Farah Abdulkarim (third place), Waleed Suliman (sixth place), Mario Garcia Romo (13th place) and Cade Bethmann (15th place). Abdulkarim's heroics at the front of the pack last year made him the fourth Rebel to ever finish within the top-three at the regional meet.
The Rebels are coming off a similarly dominant showing at the SEC Championships, where Ole Miss recorded the largest margin of victory since 2015 with a 55-point edge toward its second straight SEC title. All-American Waleed Suliman was the top finisher for Ole Miss, taking third and missing out on runner-up honors by one tenth of a second in a mad dash to the finish line. Abdulkarim (fourth) and Bethmann (sixth) also earned First-Team All-SEC honors, while freshman Cole Bullock (ninth) and junior Michael Coccia (13th) each earned Second-Team honors. Bullock also earned All-Freshman honors as the top freshman finisher.
Other Rebel men in action this weekend include Dalton Hengst, Parker Scott and Robinson Snider.
The No. 27 Rebel women, meanwhile, are coming off of a historic second place finish at the SEC Championships. That performance matched the best conference finish by Ole Miss in the women's race in 2016. Ole Miss trailed only No. 1 Arkansas (21), defeating third-place Missouri by 66 points at a margin of 93-159. After having never finished in the top three prior to the 2016 season, Ole Miss has finished at least third in each of the last four championship meets.
Junior Victoria Simmons was the top finisher for a tight Rebel pack that had a scoring spread of just 7.8 seconds, finishing 14th for Second-Team All-SEC honors.
Ole Miss has punched tickets to the NCAA Championships in each of the last three seasons despite having never done so prior, earning an at-large berth to the 2016 and 2018 national meets while winning its first-ever South Region title in 2017. The Rebels currently rank second in the South Region rankings entering the meet behind No. 12 Florida State.
Three All-Region Rebel women return from 2018 in Lisa Vogelgesang (14th place), Maddie King (20th place) and Ylvi Traxler (25th place). Other Ole Miss women running on Friday include Skylar Boogerd, Chelsea Drum, Anna Elkin, Emma McClellan and Maddie McHugh.
Competition will begin with the women's 6K at 7:30 a.m. CT. The men's 10K will take place at 8:30 a.m. CT.
