Warnell Tallies Career-High, but Rebs Fall in Five

11/3/2019 | Volleyball

Senior Nayo Warnell registers 16 kills Sunday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Despite four Rebels with double-digit kills, including a career-best outing, Ole Miss Volleyball (14-8, 6-5 SEC) dropped its second-straight five-setter, falling to Alabama in Foster Auditorium by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 9-15.

Senior middle blocker Nayo Warnell delivered a career-high performance with 16 kills, finishing on a .519 efficiency and adding seven blocks. Classmate Leah Mulkey also recorded a strong performance, adding a season-high 14 kills.

Fellow veteran Emily Stroup turned in her second double-double performance in as many contests, posting 13 kills and 12 digs, for her 11th of the year. Sophomore middle Aubrey Sultemeier also tallied a career-best with 12 kills.

League-leader Lauren Bars recorded her 13th double-double of the year and third straight, dishing out 52 assists with 10 digs.  Senior Nicole Purcell registered 19 digs, while sophomore Avery Bugg added 10.

Alabama began with 6-2 run in opening stanza, but the momentum quickly shifted as the Rebels collected five straight points, including back-to-back kills from Warnell, to tie and take control of the set at 9-7. The frame turned in a back-and-forth affair after Alabama turned in four-point rally, regaining the lead at 12-11.

The squads traded points, until a kill and block from Sultemeier paired with an Alabama error registered three consecutive Rebel points, putting Ole Miss up 19-16.

The Tide continued to fight, evening the game at 20-20 on a pair of kills. A denial from Warnell kept the Rebels on top at 22-21, before Alabama continued to pressure, tallying another three slams to go up set point 24-22. They eventually took the set 25-23.

Warnell posted six kills on a .600 hitting percentage and two blocks in the first frame alone.

In similar fashion for the second set, Alabama began on a 6-1 run, but the rally was quickly spoiled on a surge led by Mulkey. A slam from sophomore middle Aubrey Sultemeier, sandwiched between Mulkey kills, trimmed the deficit to 5-8, and the Rebels continued to claw back, evening things at 12 all on yet another Mulkey connection.

Things were evened again at the 15-15 and 17-17 marks, until another spree from Mulkey put the Rebels up 18-17 and 20-18. Mulkey continued to guide the offense, registering another kill as Ole Miss picked up the last four of five points to even the match with a 25-20 set.

Mulkey was explosive in the second set, tallying seven kills on an .825 efficiency.

By the 13-13 mark in the third frame, the two teams had already endured seven ties. Alabama gained the edge on three point a row, but the run was snapped on a Warnell kill to bring the score to 17-15 Tide.

Alabama used a pair of 3-0 rallies to add to their lead, eventually taking the set 25-18.

After reaching yet another tie at 10-10 in the fourth set, the Rebels went on a 4-1 run, including a pair of Warnell rejections, to build a 14-11 lead. The Tide took advantage of a series of Ole Miss miscues, tying the contest once more at 15-15.

The teams endured five more ties from that point forward, until the momentum ignited in the Rebels, who used a Stroup kill, Alabama error, and block from Sultemeier and Mulkey to tally three consecutive points and even the match at 25-22.

The Tide started the finale with the momentum, registering four of the first five points. Alabama continued to control the frame, taking the match with a 15-9 decision in the fifth.
