Ole Miss takes Florida to five sets for the first time since 2009
OXFORD, Miss. – Despite hitting at an above .400 hitting percentage for the opening stanza Friday night, Ole Miss Volleyball (14-9, 6-6 SEC) dropped its third-straight heartbreaker, falling to No. 12 Florida (19-3, 10-1 SEC) by scores of 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 14-25, 8-15.
The Rebels opened at a .406 clip, their highest in an opening set of league play this season. It was the first time Ole Miss has taken Florida to five sets since 2009, a loss in Oxford to the then-No. 5 Gators.
Leading the way for the Rebs was senior Emily Stroup, who registered her third straight double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. It was her 12th of the year. Junior setter Lauren Bars also recorded a double-double, dishing out 37 assists with 13 digs, for her league-leading 14th of the season.
Freshman Anna Bair tallied 12 kills, with the senior duo of Leah Mulkey and Nayo Warnell posting nine and seven, respectively. Warnell tallied a team-high seven blocks, while fellow veteran Nicole Purcell collected a team-best 23 digs. Sophomore Avery Bugg added 14, just three shy of her career-best.
Ole Miss held Florida to a .208 hitting percentage, their fourth-lowest efficiency on the season.
The Rebels and the Gators endured 11 ties in the opening stanza, neither squad leading by more than three points throughout the frame. Ole Miss used back-to-back Stroup slams and a Florida miscue to tally three points in a row to tie and take control of the set at 9-7.
The Rebels continued to lead until a 4-0 run from Florida put the Gators back in control at 15-13. A kill from Bair evened things again at 20 all, and then Florida once again took control on a pair of kills.
The deficit was short lived for the Rebels, courtesy of back-to-back kills from Warnell to bring the squads to a 22-22 tie. After a Florida kill put the Gators back in the lead, the Rebels picked up the final three points of the frame, ending the cat-and-mouse contest and picking up the match lead after a 25-23 first set.
The Gators opened the gates quickly in Set 2, registering the first six points of the set and went on to build an eight-point advantage at 12-4. A 4-1 run, including a Warnell kill and rejection with Bars, for the Rebels midway through the set trimmed things to 13-8, but the Gators continued to control the frame and evened the match with a 25-15 score.
The third frame was a game of runs. Ole Miss picked up the first three points, but the score was quickly evened with three straight from the Florida side. The Rebels then used a 5-0 rally to create a 12-5 advantage, capitalizing on kills from Bars and Bair and a block from the duo of Warnell and Stroup.
Ole Miss continued to dominate the frame, carrying an eight-point lead at 17-9, before Florida responded with seven straight points, narrowing the gap to just one at 17-16. The Rebels again used a rally, registering four straight points on a set of back-to-back kills from Bair, and slams from Mulkey and junior Bayleigh Scott.
Florida continued to threaten, going on a 3-1 run to again apply pressure and bring the score within three at 22-19. A pair of kills from Warnell and Bars brought Ole Miss to set point, and after Florida again inched closer with back-to-back points, Bair sealed the set and gave the Rebels the match advantage at 25-21.
Florida opened the fourth set on an 8-2 run, then added a four-point rally to build cushion at 13-5. In similar fashion to the Gators the previous frame, Ole Miss began to chip away at the deficit with a 7-1 run using a strong net game. In that sequence the Rebels posted three blocks, including a pair of back-to-back denials from Bair, to come within four at 18-14.
The Gators registered the next seven consecutive points to take the set 25-14 and force a fifth and final frame.
Tied at 4-4 in the finale, Florida collected five of the next six points to build a 9-5 advantage. The Gators continued to hold an edge, tallying the final four points, including three straight from sophomore Thayer Hall, to steal the match and spoil the potential upset.
Hall finished with a match-high 23 kills.
