Rebels Fire Third Top-Five Program Total of the Week in Defeat
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 5 Ole Miss rifle team was bested by No. 6 Akron, 4677-4669 in a neutral-site match on Saturday inside the Buell Armory at Barker Hall on the University of Kentucky campus.
Despite the defeat, it was a week to remember for Ole Miss (2-3, 1-3 GARC) as the team fired its third top-five score in program history. The Rebels fired a 4674 against West Virginia (third-best, Nov. 2), a 4672 (fourth-best, Nov. 8) and a 4669 (tied for fifth) on Saturday.
Junior Abby Buesseler led the match with an 1173 total (583-590), but four Akron (4-0, 2-0 GARC) student-athletes finished two through five. The Zips used four-point wins in smallbore (2324-2320) and air rifle (2353-2349) to win the match. Akron also set its smallbore and aggregate program records.
Buesseler and freshman Claire O'Neel (582) paced the Rebels yet again in smallbore. They were joined by another rookie, Kristen Derting (579), and senior Alana Kelly (576) in the scoring. Derting had a career day all-around improving in smallbore, air rifle (588) and aggregate (1167). Junior Sophia Cuozzo also tied her smallbore record of 577 in Relay Two.
In air rifle, Ole Miss saw a mix of counters and non-counters perform well. Junior Kamilla Kisch (591) was the top Rebel along with senior Hayley Carroll (590) as non-counters. Buesseler (590), O'Neel (587), Kelly (587), and sophomore Erin Walsh (585) were the Rebel scorers.
The schedule does get easier for the Rebels looking ahead, but ultimately team scores are what will determine which eight programs qualify for the NCAA Rifle Championships in March. Ole Miss is off to a solid start with a top-three score location average of 4671.33 points.

On the even contest:
"Going into this contest I believed Ole Miss and Akron were pretty evenly matched. I thought the win could easily go to either team. Akron outperformed us today. They fired a school record 2324 in smallbore and their 4677 set a new school record for the combined aggregate. Coincidently, Akron's previous school record was 4669, the score we fired today."
On seeing continuous improvement:
"Ole Miss continues to perform solidly. Our smallbore score is our season best. Our total score ties for the fifth best in program history. We are definitely making progress and I know this team can do much better. Each week more of the pieces are coming together. We just have to keep working hard and bringing our best effort."
On standout performers:
"We had great contributions today from the freshmen. Kristen Derting shot personal bests in both events. Her smallbore score of 579 improved her PR by three points and her 588 in air rifle was four points above her previous best bringing her combined aggregate PR to a solid 1167.
Claire O'Neel fired a 582 in smallbore, which tied her personal best set yesterday. She has been solid for us in both guns every match this year. We very much appreciate Kentucky hosting our match with Akron."
