No. 8 Rifle Looks to Pass Test at NCAA Qualifier

Ole Miss travels to Alabama for 8 a.m. match Saturday
OXFORD, Miss.– The No. 8 Ole Miss Rifle team looks to stay sharp Saturday at its NCAA qualifier at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Ala. The match, hosted by No. 10 Jacksonville State, begins at 8 a.m. CT.
The score accumulated in the match will be added to the top three-score season average to determine which eight teams advance to the NCAA Rifle Championships in March. Ole Miss owns an average score of 4671.67, fired at three different locations. A total of 12 qualifiers will be held across the country over the weekend.

The No. 10 Gamecocks own a three-score average of 4667.33. Mekenna Richardson is JSU's top shooter averaging 579.69 points in smallbore and 587.23 in air rifle.
LAST MEETING…
Ole Miss opened the season hosting Jacksonville State on Sept. 29. The Gamecocks edged the Rebels, 4666-4645. Junior Hayley Carroll posted a then-career best in air rifle (592), while redshirt freshman Jillian Zakrzeski led the Rebels with an overall score of 1163.
Sophomore Sophia Cuozzo tallied her first perfect 200 in prone competition to help her earn a 572 in smallbore. Sophomore Abby Buesseler and senior Randi Loudin tied for the best score in the event (576). Zakrzeski tied her career-best 573 points, with personal bests in kneeling (189) and prone (199), as a non-counter. Jacksonville state tallied the top three smallbore scores (585, 583, 582).
Carroll fired a then-personal record 592 to lead all shooters in air rifle, as a non-counter. Powering Ole Miss' scorers in second was Zakrzeski with a 590. Sophomore Kamilla Kisch (588), Buesseler (586), and senior Harley Gardner (583) all eclipsed 580 points.

"We are looking forward to our match at Jacksonville State. We opened the 2018-19 season competing with them at home and now we get to shoot with them at their place. They have a good facility and historically Ole Miss has performed pretty well there."
On what to expect in the match…
"Like most of our matches this year, we are pretty evenly matched with JSU. I expect it will be a close contest this weekend. JSU outshot us in September, but Ole Miss has improved. Saturday promises to be very interesting."
On the team's mindset…
"Everyone has been working exceptionally hard and the team has made significant progress this season. We just need to focus on what we've been working on. If we can do that we should have a solid performance on Saturday."

LAST MATCH HIGHLIGHTS…
No. 8 Ole Miss tied its second-best score of the season in a 4665-4649 win at No. 9 Memphis, Feb. 19 inside the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range.
Gardner shattered the school record for kneeling with an incredible 199, besting the old mark by three points. Both teams were deadlocked 2311-2311 after smallbore, but Ole Miss pulled away in air rifle (2354-2338) to finish fourth in the Great America Rifle Conference standings at 4-4.
The match began in emphatic fashion when Gardner fired her near-flawless mark in kneeling. Her record bettered the mark of 196 set by both Buesseler (twice last season) and Zakrzeski back in October. Gardner went on to fire season highs of 199 in prone and 581 in smallbore to lead the team.
Carroll again led the Rebels and the field in air rifle, firing a 592. She narrowly edged Zakrzeski's 591. Also scoring for Ole Miss were freshman Erin Walsh (586) and Kisch (585).
UP NEXT…
The NCAA will reveal which teams and individuals qualify for the national match on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. CT. Ole Miss will compete next at the GARC Championships, Feb. 22-23 in Akron, Ohio.

- Ole Miss is seeking its second NCAA berth as a team and first since 2006. The Rebels have sent at least one individual to Nationals seven straight seasons.
- This will be the fifth consecutive season the Rebels and Gamecocks have met in the NCAA qualifier (three times in Jacksonville; twice in Oxford). Last season, Ole Miss fired its best-ever qualifier score of 4665.
