2/25/2019 | Men's Golf
Rebels won 6.5 to 5.5
CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. – The Ole Miss men's golf team defeated USF today in a match play event at Belleair Country Club.
Monday's schedule began with eight singles matches. The afternoon segment consisted of quartet matches as the Rebels paired up to battle the Bulls.
The Rebels took the morning single matches 5.5 to 2.5, winning five of the eight matches and halving one.
The singles portion was highlighted by Cecil Wegener, who defeated Albin Bergstrom, the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, 4&3.
Brody Blackmon, Jack Gnam, Beau Briggs, and Sarut Vongchaisit each won their singles matches along with Wegener.
The Rebels struggled early in the afternoon in four-ball play, with the Bulls taking significant leads going into the back nine.
Jackson Suber and Cecil Wegener eventually sealed it for the Rebels, winning 2&1 making the Rebel count 6.5 to USF's 5.5 at the end of the day.
"Today was exactly what we needed as a team," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We showed a lot of toughness and good golf while getting a few of our weaknesses exposed under some pressure situations."
"To beat a very good USF team after battling throughout the entire day should give our guys some confidence over our next few events. We are a very young team that is only going to get better the more reps we get under our belts."
The Rebels return to the course March 3-5 for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
