Men’s Golf Places Seventh, Ahead of Four Ranked Teams
CABO SAN LUCAS – The No. 48 Ole Miss men's golf team finished the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Tuesday afternoon in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Rebels finished seventh as a team at 14-over (281-294-291—866), while Beau Briggs picked up his third top-10 finish of his senior year.
Ole Miss shot a 7-over 291 in the final round, finishing ahead of four teams ranked higher in the national polls including a trio of SEC foes. The Rebels were above No. 14 Alabama, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 27 Florida State and No. 32 Arknasas. No. 1 Oklahoma State captured the tournament tile at 32-under followed by No. 9 Arizona State. The Rebels were first in the field in total pars with 179, and went 10-under on the par-5's as a team, averaging 4.78 strokes on the longest holes on the course.
"It was a good week for our group as we proved to ourselves that we can compete with any team in the country," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Hopefully we take some positives from here in to our next event. We have a quick turnaround and need to be ready to go."
Briggs put together a top-10 performance after a final round 1-under 70 to end his tournament at 3-under par (69-71-70—210). The senior was second on the team in pars and birdies, with 37 and 10 respectively. Briggs was one of eight players to shoot par-or-better all three rounds.
"A top 10 this week gives me a lot of confidence moving forward into our spring season, especially on a challenging course with such a good field," said Briggs. "I played solid all week and look forward to carrying that momentum into next week in San Diego."
Sarut Vongchaisit finished tied for 33rd (71-72-76—219) and gained the most strokes in the field on the par 3's, playing them 2-under throughout the week. The freshman had appeared in the lineup just once before, and had the lone eagle of the tournament for Ole Miss making a three on the par-5 fourth hole this afternoon.
Jackson Suber played his best golf of the tournament with a 72 (+1). The freshman didn't let a double bogey on the par-4 10th, his second hole of the day, deter him. He answered with four straight pars before recording his first birdie of the day on No. 15. Suber added another birdie at the 18th and proceeded to par his final eight holes. Along with a par at No. 9 to start the day, Suber recorded all pars on the front.
On the flip side, senior Josh Seiple tallied nine pars throughout the back nine en route to final round 74 (+3). He finished tied for 40th alongside Suber at 9-over (76-72-74—222).
The Rebels return to the course next week, March 11-12, for the Lamkin San Diego Classic in Chula Vista, California.
