Men’s Golf Heads to Mexico for Querencia Cabo Collegiate

3/2/2019 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 48 Ole Miss men's golf team travels to Mexico for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas starting on Sunday. This will be the seventh time in as many seasons that the Rebels will compete in the event, a streak that began with winning the tournament during the 2012-13 campaign.

The Rebels will tee it up against a stacked field at the Querencia Club that includes eight teams ranked in Golfstat's national rankings. Joining Ole Miss in Mexico are No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 12 LSU, No. 14 Alabama, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 27 Florida State, No. 32 Arkansas, No. 36 Baylor, No. 50 Arizona, Houston and Rice.

Head coach Chris Malloy is bringing six Rebels to compete at the event. Cecil Wegener will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Jackson Suber, Beau Briggs, Sarut Vongchaisit, and Josh Seiple. Jack Gnam will compete as an individual.

"We are extremely excited to get back to Querencia and get the tournament started this weekend," Malloy said. "We have been a part of this event for a long time, and it has evolved into the most elite field in college golf."

Cecil Wegner is coming off an individual win at the All-American Intercollegiate, where he earned the first medal of his young career after consecutive rounds under par (70-68—138). His second round 68 (-4) was the only round in the 60s on day two, tied for the lowest round of the entire tournament and helped Ole Miss tie for the lowest team total (290) in the second round.

Wegener joins seniors Beau Briggs and Josh Seiple as the Rebels who have competed in the event before. Briggs tied for 42nd last year (70-75-76—221), while Seiple put together a top-30 finish in 2017 (70-75-69—214).

Sarut Vonghchaisit sees himself in the lineup for the second consecutive time this spring, while fellow freshman Jackson Suber has made the starting five in six of the seven events this year with a stroke average of 72.0 (second on team).

"It has become a home away from home for our team and there is certainly a sense of comfort for our returning players," Malloy said. "This will be another great opportunity to prove that we belong among the nation's elite programs."

First round begins Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
