Senior Harley Gardner shatters record in kneeling discipline Saturday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 8 Ole Miss Rifle team tied its second-best score of the season in a 4665-4649 win at No. 9 Memphis, Saturday inside the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range.
Senior Harley Gardner shattered the school record for kneeling with an incredible 199, besting the old mark by three points. Both teams were deadlocked 2311-2311 after smallbore, but Ole Miss pulled away in air rifle (2354-2338) to finish fourth in the Great America Rifle Conference standings at 4-4.
Record falls in smallbore…
The match began in emphatic fashion when Gardner fired a near-flawless 199 in kneeling. Her record bettered the mark of 196 set by both sophomore Abby Buesseler (twice last season) and freshman Jillian Zakrzeski back in October. Gardner went on to fire season highs of 199 in prone and 581 in smallbore to lead the team.
Senior Randi Loudin used a career-high 192 in standing to finish with a 580. Buesseler used a season-high 199 in prone to tally 578 points. Completing the Ole Miss scoring was freshman Erin Walsh's 572. Leighton Dempster of Memphis was the top shooter with a 589 in smallbore and a 1171 aggregate total. The 2311 Ole Miss fired on Saturday was the third most for 2018-19.
All-around effort in air rifle…
Junior Hayley Carroll again led the Rebels and the field in air rifle, firing a 592. She narrowly edged Zakrzeski's 591. Also scoring for Ole Miss were Walsh (586) and sophomore Kamilla Kisch (585). Both Carroll and junior Alana Kelly (587) were one point off their career bests.
What lies ahead…
Ole Miss fired a 4665 for the third consecutive match and ended the regular season with a top-three score average of 4671.67. The Rebels remain at No. 8 in the NCAA team standings.
