Waleed Suliman, Maddie King Break Ole Miss’ Mile Records

2/9/2019 | Track and Field

Nashville, Tenn. and Boston, Mass. – Ole Miss track & field concluded its regular season in dominant fashion, highlighted by Waleed Suliman and Maddie King breaking school records in the men's and women's mile Saturday afternoon.

The Rebels were split up for Saturday's action, with six men's distance runners competing in the mile at the David Hemery Valentine Invite in Boston, while the rest of the squad was in Nashville for day two of the Music City Challenge.

"We had an overall good weekend both in Vanderbilt and Boston," said Ole Miss head track & field coach Connie Price-Smith. "Now it is time to get ready for the SEC Indoor Championships."

Suliman put the entire country on notice by running the fastest mile in the NCAA this season (3:56.78). The sophomore became the second Rebel in history to run a sub-4:00 mile, breaking former Rebel Sean Tobin's 3:58.28 record that was set on Feb. 3, 2018.

Derek Gutierrez also had a meet to remember, becoming the third-Rebel to break the 4:00 mark. The senior clocked in at 3:58.55, which is the third-fastest in Ole Miss history. His previous best came earlier this year at the Vanderbilt Invite on Jan. 19, when he ran a 4:03.23.

"The track at Boston University is known for fast miles, so we came here aiming for a few sub-four-minute miles and NCAA qualifying marks," said Ole Miss associate head cross country and assistant track & field coach Ryan Vanhoy. "I thought our guys did a great job of competing in their heats and took a nice step forward as we progress towards championship season."

The other four Rebels in Boston also performed well. Mario Garcia Romo led the rest of the pack, finishing in 4:03.30 for a PR that ranks No. 9 in school history. Everett Smulders (4:04.65) and Cade Bethmann (4:05.08) also set PRs that are 12th and 13th in the Ole Miss record book. Dalton Hengst (4:08.61) finished just shy of his personal best.

Running in Nashville, Maddie King also reached legendary status at Ole Miss by breaking the school record in women's mile (4:46.45). She now ranks fourth in the SEC this season.

The previous record-holder in the women's mile was redshirt-senior Shelby Brown, who also competed in Saturday's race and finished 13th (4:51.26). Chelsea Drum also ran on Saturday, coming in 23rd after running two-second PR at 4:57.54.

The Rebel men also had representation in the 800m in Nashville. John Rivera, Jr. led the way at 1:49.41, which was the second-fastest at the meet and moved him up to seventh in school history. Griffin Riley (1:51.76) and Shamar Tucker (1:55.09) also had solid performances, coming in fifth and 19th respectively.

The underclassmen women's sprinters for Ole Miss also had a great day, following up their strong performances from Friday night. All-three qualified for the final heat of the 60m-Dash, led by Kelly Rowe who ran a PR 7.47 which places her 13th in school history. Brandee Pressley came in sixth (7.52) and T'Aja Cameron finished eighth (7.62)

Tedreauna Britt led the Rebels once again in shot put, throwing a PR 15.05m (49-04.50). This ranked 10th in the meet and fifth in Ole Miss history. Leah Klein (13.67m 44-10.25) and Shey Taiwo (13.51m 44-04.00) also competed in the shot put on Saturday.

Ole Miss placed four athletes in the 400-meter dash in Nashville, and all four had personal bests. James Westbrook led the way for the men, placing seventh (47.39), which ranks 13th in Ole Miss history. Alvin Westbrook (12th, 48.33) and Christian Yancey (32nd, 50.43) rounded out the Rebel lineup. Orianna Shaw represented the Rebel women, coming in eighth place at 55.80.
