CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field concluded the Trailblazer Challenge with several strong performances, highlighted by two wins by Allen Gordon and Lindsey Murray at Miami on Saturday.
Ole Miss finished fourth in the men's standings with 80 points while the Rebel women took fifth at 79 points. Tennessee swept both team titles, with the No. 20 men defeating Ohio State, 182-109, and the No. 16 Lady Vols edging No. 8 Miami by one point at 130-129.
Making his 2019 outdoor debut, sophomore Allen Gordon showcased his talent in all three jumping events. Gordon, who is coming off his first career SEC medal performance after taking bronze in the long jump at the indoor conference meet in February, started the day with a third-place finish in the high jump (2.16m/6-11.50) before winning the long jump (7.75m/25-05.00) and taking second in the triple jump (14.78m/58-05.75). Gordon contributed 24 points for the Ole Miss men today, which accounted for 30 percent of the Rebel scoring.
Not only were his performances today key for the Rebel men in terms of points, but he also opens the outdoor season high up the early NCAA descending lists. His winning leap in the long jump of 7.75m (25-05.25) is a wind-legal PR that puts him No. 2 in the NCAA behind Florida NCAA Champion Grant Holloway, while his high jump mark of 2.12m (6-11.50) ranks No. 6 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the East Region.
Senior Lindsey Murray opened up her final collegiate season with a win in the pole vault on Saturday. Murray, a multiple time national qualifier in the pole vault in her long career, won today at a height of 4.15m (13-07.25) while also taking three good tries at 4.36m (14-03.50) to break her own school record of 4.35m (13-03.25) that earned her SEC bronze last outdoor season. Murray currently ranks No. 3 in the NCAA and leads both the East Region and SEC.
Freshman thrower Tedreauna Britt opened her collegiate discus career in high fashion, finishing third at a personal best 53.45m (175-04) that already ranks her No. 4 in Rebel history. Britt also put herself in good position to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, as her throw currently sits No. 7 on the NCAA list and No. 6 in the East Region.
Sophomore Shey Taiwo, a Second-Team All-American indoors this year in the weight throw, opened her second outdoor season with a massive career best in the hammer throw on Saturday. Taiwo heaved a nine-foot PR of 61.25m (200-11), the third-best throw in school history, as well as the 10th-best in the NCAA and fifth-best in the East Region at this early stage of the outdoor season.
Senior Annika Larsson also made the final, finishing sixth at 56.16m (184-03), currently No. 26 in the East Region.
Freshman Joseph Benedetto (fifth, 56.64m/185-10) and sophomore Chris Long (seventh, 51.55m/169-01) set PRs in the men's hammer, with Benedetto moving up to ninth all-time at Ole Miss in his first try at the hammer collegiately, with Long ranking 10th all-time at his mark today.
Sophomore transfer Elijah Dryer paced the Rebel sprinters in his first outdoor meet at Ole Miss, taking second in the 100-meter dash (10.49, +2.0) and third in the 200 (21.07, -1.3). Dryer's 100-meter time fell just four hundredths off his career best 10.45 from his freshman season last year at Alabama-Huntsville and currently sits No. 19 in the NCAA and No. 14 in the East Region. His time in the 200, meanwhile, was a career-best by one hundredth of a second and ranks No. 15 all-time at Ole Miss while also sitting No. 11 nationally and No. 9 in the East Region.
The Rebel freshmen women's sprinters also got off to a great start outdoors. Brandee Presley led the way, finishing eighth in both the 100-meter (11.67, +0.4) and 200-meter (23.88, -0.4). Both her times already push her onto the all-time Rebel lists in 14th in both events, and both also sit within the top-30 nationally and top-25 regionally.
Fellow freshmen Jayda Eckford (ninth, 23.90, -2.1) and Kelly Rowe (12th, 24.09, -2.1) also ran 200-meter times that rank within the top-30 in the East Region. Eckford and Rowe, along with Presley and Jeanette Paul, finished third in the 4x100-meter relay at 44.88 seconds.
Sophomore Maddie King had a career day in the women's 1500-meter race, finishing runner-up at a five-second PR of 4:27.57 that puts her ninth all-time at Ole Miss ahead of teammate Ylvi Traxler, who finished fourth overall at 4:33.12. King currently ranks No. 14 nationally and No. 8 in the East Region, while Traxler sits at No. 25 on the East Region list.
The men's 1500-meter race came down to the last sprint, as sophomore and returning Honorable Mention All-American outdoors Everett Smulders and freshman Dalton Hengst were narrowly out-kicked by Tennessee's Zach Long (3:57.61). Smulders came in second at 3:58.14 while Hengst finished third at 3:58.55. Freshman Nick Moulai also ran, finishing seventh at 3:59.67.
Kenney Broadnax, making his collegiate outdoor debut, finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at the 13th-best time in school history at 14.54.
Ole Miss returns home this coming week to host the Ole Miss Classic, a non-scored team invitational that will run this coming Saturday (March 30) at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
