Mark Robertson Breaks Ole Miss 10K Record

3/29/2019 | Track and Field

Record of 29:00.46 Broke Previous Record Set in 1996 by Bernard Kuria

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Ole Miss track & field distance runners put together an incredible evening of 10,000-meter performances at the Raleigh Relays, highlighted by senior Mark Robertson breaking the school 10K record with the SEC's fastest time in 2019 on Friday night.

With most of the Rebels back home in Oxford awaiting the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday, three Rebel distance runners traveled to the Raleigh Relays to run the invitational sections of the 10K at one of the most competitive races of the season. Sophomores Clio Ozanne-Jaques and Victoria Simmons represented the Rebel women, while Robertson was the lone competitor on the men's side.

Robertson entered the meet with the sixth-fastest time in Rebel history at 29:49.02, but tonight he ran a 49-second PR at 29:00.46 that broke the Ole Miss record that had stood for more than 23 years. The previous record of 29:07.38 was set by Bernard Kuria on March 24, 1996, when Robertson was less than two months old. Robertson's time – which was good for 14th overall tonight in the invitational section – leads all SEC runners this season and ranks 10th in the NCAA, with the nine times faster than him all coming within this race.

Clio Ozanne-Jaques, a native Australian, finished fifth among the 42 participants in the women's invitational 10K after running 33:42.06 in her first career 10K race as a Rebel. This time puts her in elite company, as she now ranks second in Ole Miss history and trails school record holder, Emily Bean, by just three seconds at 33:39.36. The time also ranks as the best in the SEC and the fourth best in the NCAA this season.

Simmons also ran the 10K for her first time as a collegian and had a night to remember. The sophomore placed 14th overall with a time of 34:24.00, which is the second fastest time in the SEC this season behind Ozanne-Jaques, as well as the fifth fastest in Ole Miss history and 12th in the NCAA this year.

Ole Miss now looks ahead to Saturday, when it hosts the Ole Miss Classic. Admission is free to the meet, which begins at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow morning. More information about the meet can be found here.
