Ole Miss Shoots Final Round 300 To Finish Tenth
AUBURN, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team wrapped up play at the Evans Derby Experience Monday afternoon in Auburn, Alabama.
The Rebels tied for tenth as a team, while Julia Johnson picked up a top-10 finish individually.
Ole Miss shot a 12-over 300 in the final round to finish in the top-10 as a team. The Rebels finished above three teams ranked higher in Golfstat's national rankings. No. 11 Florida State took home the team title at 6-over, while Kent State's Karoline Stormo took home the individual honor at 3-under.
"The course played tough today with a lot of tucked pins and gusty winds," said head coach Kory Henkes. "The team really grinded all day and played with a lot of fight. We made some clutch birdies down the stretch and I know we can take a lot of positives from this week."
Julia Johnson put together another top-10 performance after a final round 2-over 74 to finish her tournament at 2-over (72-72-74—218). The sophomore led the team in pars (40) for the third straight tournament and was one of five players in the field to play both the par 5's and par 3's under par.
"Julia has played some stellar golf lately," Henkes said. "Today wasn't her best ball striking day but her short game was phenomenal in helping her secure another top-10 finish against the best collegiate golfers in the country. This week will give her a boost of confidence going into Texas next week."
It marked Johnson's fifth top-10 finish this season, and already the third of her spring.
"Coming off another solid week I'm feeling really good about the rest of the season," Johnson said. "I've played some really consistent golf the past few days, made a lot of up and downs, and it gives me a lot of confidence moving forward. I'm ready to get back to Oxford and fix some kinks before we get back on the road."
Macy Somoskey finished in the top-50 (80-73-76—229). The freshman was third on the team in pars with 37, 15 coming in her second round 1-over 73. Fellow freshman Ellen Hutchinson-Kay tied for 56th after going 78-75-77—230. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Week was second on the team in birdies with five.
Kennedy Swann shot a final round 3-over 75 to finish tied for 56th (75-80-75—230). The junior was second on the team in pars (39) and gained the most strokes off the par 3's, going 2-under.
Conner Beth Ball finished with a final round 3-over 75 with one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys. The sophomore was mistake free on the front nine today except for a miscue on the par 3 seventh hole. Ball improved each day and finished tied for 71st after going 83-76-75—234.
Kie Purdom saved her best round for last, tying for the lowest round of the day with Johnson with a 2-over 74. The senior, playing as an individual, went 79-76-74 to tie for 48th.
Pi-Lillebi Hermansson made her first appearance since the Bruin Wave Invitational in California and led the team in birdies with nine, good for fourth in the field. Hermansson had the low round of the tournament for the Rebels with a second round 1-under 71, and finished tied for 67th (79-71-82—232).
The Rebels return to the course on Monday, April 1, for The Bruzzy in Argyle, Texas.
