LAST TIME ON THE COURT
The Rebels suffered a heartbreaker in their SEC opener, falling 3-4 to Kentucky, as things came down to the wire on a third-set tiebreaker for match point.
In the match with Kentucky, five of the six Rebels took the opening set in singles action. Junior Tim Sandkaulen picked up his second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent, taking down No. 29 Ryo Matsumura in identical 6-4, 6-4 decisions. The win was his fourth straight.
The rookie pair of Simon Junk and Karlo Kranic is off to an impressive start in doubles play. The duo has picked up four wins in five contests, including clinching the doubles point in both league matches this season.
The Rebels got back into the win column in their nightcap Sunday, sweeping the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. Each home victory for Ole Miss has come without surrendering a point.
Cotter Wilson continued with his streak of perfection in Oxford against MVSU. The sophomore carries an unblemished 5-0 record in home matches, and has yet to surrender a single game.
REBELS IN THE RANKINGS
While the Rebels catapulted up 18 spots in the ITA rankings after their defeat of No. 16 Alabama, the team sits at No. 40 this week, with a veteran duo cracking the individual lists for the first time this spring. The doubles pair of Tim Sandkaulen and Filip Kraljevic come in at No. 75, while Sandkaulen also joins the rankings in singles at No. 73. Both were ranked this fall, with Sandkaulen registering a career-best rating of No. 15.
ROAD REBS
Ole Miss has two wins over Top 25 opponents this season, both coming on the road. The Rebels first took down then-No. 20 Oklahoma State in early February, and followed that knocking off conference foe then-No. 16 Alabama in the semifinals of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in late February in Montgomery, Ala.
CLINCH KING
Senior Fabian Fallert has come up large in big matches this season. He clinched both match points in both of the Rebels' top-25 upsets. His efforts against the Cowboys landed him SEC Player of the Week honors, the first weekly honor of his career. His clincher against Alabama was also critical and his first victory over a ranked opponent this season. His play against Kentucky Friday was also impressive, rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to take four consecutive games and eventually win on a 7-4 tiebreaker.
SCOUTING THE GATORS
The Gators collected their first league win last weekend, downing Arkansas 6-1. Prior to that, Florida suffered its first two losses of the season, falling to then-No. 5 USC and then-No. 10 Stanford in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Four of the Gators' seven wins have come against ITA Top 50 opponents. Florida and Ole Miss met last season in the postseason, when the Gators eliminated Ole Miss in the Sweet 16. The squad returns all but one starter from that team, and carries four ranked individuals as well as four ranked duos.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
The Gamecocks have won four of their last five decisions, falling only to conference foe Arkansas 2-5 to begin SEC play. It was only their second loss of the season, dropping a 4-0 contest with then-No. 5 USC in Melbourne, Australia. South Carolina hosts No. 8 Mississippi State Friday before welcoming the Rebs. Ole Miss is 3-2 in the last five meetings against South Carolina, including a 4-1 decision in last spring's SEC Tournament Second Round.
UP NEXT
Ole Miss splits next weekend, hosting Auburn for a Thursday night tilt before returning to the state of Alabama, taking on the Crimson Tide in a rematch Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
