Senior Derek Gutierrez is the First Rebel to Ever Score in the Men’s Mile
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field senior Derek Gutierrez posted the highest finish ever by a Rebel in the mile, earning First-Team All-American status at the final day of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Ole Miss entered today's mile final as the only school with multiple entries in the mile, with Gutierrez and sophomore Waleed Suliman working together early on. Both Rebels jumped into an early lead, holding firm at the top at the 800-meter mark. It was then, though, that the rest of the pack jumped ahead and took the lead from Ole Miss. Gutierrez was able to hold on for a seventh-place finish at 4:09.28, the highest finish ever by a Rebel in the men's mile while also making him the first to ever score in the event. Suliman, meanwhile, finished ninth at 4:10.49 for Second-Team All-American honors.
Shey Taiwo represented the Rebel women this weekend in the weight throw. The sophomore just missed out on making the final, finishing 10th overall at 20.79m (68-02.50) for Second-Team All-American status – the first such honor of her career.
The Rebel men finished with three total meet points scored after Gutierrez' finish today in the mile and the eighth-place performance by the men's distance medley relay last night, which ended up tied for 47th place overall in the team standings.
Ole Miss now looks forward to the 2019 outdoor season, which begins March 22-23 at the University of Miami for the Trailblazer Challenge in Coral Gables, Florida.
