Rebels Ready for Busy Weekend at Joe Walker Invite

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field will honor 11 seniors, as well as the 2018 SEC Men's Cross Country Championship team, at the third iteration of the Joe Walker Invite at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.

TEAM NOTES
• This is the third Joe Walker Invite, which is named for the former Ole Miss track & field coach who led the Rebels to 11 top-20 national finishes, 124 All-America honors, 12 NCAA individual champions and 60 SEC individual titles during his 30-year career in Oxford. Known for his ability to groom elite-level jumpers and hurdlers and for his warm and caring persona, Walker was inducted into the Ole Miss M-Club Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
 
• Joining Ole Miss this week are Alabama A&M, Arkansas State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Georgia Tech, Jackson State, McKendree, Millsaps, Mississippi Valley State, North Alabama, Saint Louis, SIU-Edwardsville, Southeast Missouri, Troy, West Alabama and Villanova.
 
• Ole Miss owns 14 marks that rank within the NCAA top-50, as well as 20 additional performances that in the East Region top-48.
 
• 11 Rebels will be honored for Senior Day on Saturday: Anna Braswell, Shelby Brown, Julia England, Alex Enright, Fraquan Gaines, Derek Gutierrez, Annika Larsson, Lindsey Murray, Mark Robertson, Christian Yancey and manager Aaron Burnside.
 
• Ole Miss will also pay homage to the 2018 Rebel men's SEC Cross Country Championship team on Friday evening with a ring ceremony at 5:45 p.m. The Rebel men snapped Arkansas' streak of eight consecutive SEC titles, winning the first conference title in Ole Miss track and cross country history with a dominant performance. Being honored are the conference roster of Farah Abdulkarim, SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann, Michael Coccia, Mario Garcia Romo, Dalton Hengst, Mark Robertson, Ben Savino, Everett Smulders and All-American Waleed Suliman, as well as SEC Coach of the Year, Ryan Vanhoy.
 
• Promotions this weekend include a commemorative SEC Championship poster on Friday and free crawfish on Saturday.
 
WOMEN'S NOTES
• The Rebel women hold eight marks or times within the NCAA top-50 and 13 additional performances sit in the NCAA East top-48.
 
• Senior Lindsey Murray has either won of finished as the top collegian in the women's pole vault in each of the first three weeks of the outdoor season. Her season-best of 4.22m (13-10.00) came at home for the Ole Miss Classic, and it currently ranks 16th in the NCAA and No. 4 in the East Region. Murray has taken several strong attempts at breaking her school record of 4.35m (14-03.25). Murray earned her first career SEC medal at that height last outdoor season in third place at the conference meet.
 
• Junior Kieshonna Brooks scored 5,144 points in her first heptathlon of the season at the Spec Towns Invite at Georgia last week, currently putting her No. 16 in the NCAA and No. 4 in the East Region. Brooks' PR of 5,338 from the SEC Outdoor Championships last year stands as the national record in her native Saint Kitts & Nevis.
 
• Sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques impressed in her first career 10K race at the Raleigh Relays two weeks ago, running the second-best time in Rebel history at 33:42.06. She currently ranks 28th nationally and 11th in the East Region at that time. Freshman Victoria Simmons also had a successful trip to NC State, running the fifth-best time in school history at 34:24.00 (48th NCAA, 20th East).
 
• Freshman Tedreauna Britt still ranks in the top-30 nationally in the discus at her Rebel outdoor debut of 53.45m (175-04) at the Trailblazer Challenge -- the fourth-best throw in school history and the 29th-best in the NCAA.
 
• Sophomore Shey Taiwo, a Second-Team All-American indoors in the weight throw, opened the season with a nine-foot PR of 61.25m (200-11) to place third in the hammer at the Trailblazer Challenge, improving on her place in third all-time at Ole Miss. Taiwo ranks 33rd nationally and 19th in the East at that mark.
 
• The Rebel freshmen women's sprinters have been putting on a show week-in and week-out this season. Brandee Presley's 100-meter time of 11.56 from the Ole Miss Classic (10th all-time) ranks 43rd nationally and 22nd regionally, while Jayda Eckford's Ole Miss Classic 400-meter winning time of 53.98 (eighth all-time) stands at No. 49 in the NCAA (No. 31 in the East).
 
• Other Rebels ranking within the NCAA East Region top-48 are Shey Taiwo in the discus (24th, 50.61m/166-00), Kelly Rowe in the 100-meter dash (26th, 11.62), Ghania Warren in the heptathlon (27th, 4,410), Kieshonna Brooks in the 100-meter hurdles (29th, 13.67), Haley Hood in the heptathlon (29th, 4,374), Tedreauna Britt in the shot put (29th, 15.32m/50-03.25), Kaira Simmons in the long jump (34th, 5.96m/19-06.75), Maddie King in the 3000-meter steeplechase (37th, 10:40.89), Alex Enright in the javelin (38th, 45.18m/148-03), Annika Larsson in the hammer (39th, 58.91m/193-03), Ghania Warren in the long jump (41st, 5.92m/19-05.25), Nicole Kallenberger in the pole vault (46th, 3.85m/12-07.50) and Brandee Presley in the 200-meter dash (47th, 23.88).
 
• The Rebel women are coming off a fifth-place finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships in 2018, the highest finish ever outdoors in Ole Miss women's history.
 
• Ole Miss returns three Second-Team All-Americans from 2018 (Shelby Brown, 3000-meter steeplechase; Lindsey Murray, pole vault; Jeanette Paul, 4x100-meter relay), as well as seven NCAA East Region qualifiers.
 
MEN'S NOTES
• The Rebel men currently hold six marks or times within the NCAA top-50 and seven additional performances that sit within the NCAA East Region top-48.
 
• Sophomore Allen Gordon returns to action this week after missing the last two weeks of competition due to a broken wrist. Gordon opened the season with a remarkable performance at the Trailblazer Challenge, winning the long jump at an outdoor wind-legal PR of 7.75m (25-05.25), while also finishing in the top-three in the high jump (2.12m/6-11.50) and triple jump (14.78m/48-06.00).
 
• Gordon ranks 12th in the NCAA in the long jump and 25th in the high jump.
 
• Sophomore Peyton Weissmann has taken at least a share of the men's pole vault title in each of the last two weeks. Weissmann's best of the year was a tremendous bounce-back performance at the Ole Miss Classic, winning at a massive PR of 5.35m (17-06.50) while also taking attempts at joining Sam Kendricks as the only Rebels to ever join the 18-foot club. Weissmann's PR stands third all-time, 13th in the NCAA and No. 3 in the East Region.
 
• Sophomore Cade Bethmann won the 800-meter at the Ole Miss Classic at 1:48.96 (then the SEC's top time; currently No. 2) that put him No. 11 in school history and currently has him No. 20 in the NCAA and No. 10 in the East Region.
 
• Senior Mark Robertson broke the Ole Miss school record in the 10K at the Raleigh Relays, running a 49-second PR of 29:00.46 to break Bernard Kuria's 1996 record of 29:07.38. That time currently sits No. 28 in the NCAA and No. 13 in the East Region.
 
• Freshman Kenney Broadnax continued his climb up the Rebel all-time record list, winning at the Ole Miss Classic in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.08 -- a near half-second PR that put him sixth in school history. He currently ranks 31st in the NCAA, 18th in the East.
 
• Other Rebel men ranking within the East Region top-48 include: Manny Foster in the long jump (30th, 7.38m/24-02.50), Cole Colozzo in the pole vault (31st, 5.05m/16-06.75), Elijah Dryer in both the 100-meter (31st, 10.46) and 200-meter (39th, 21.07), Griffin Riley in the 800-meter (37th, 1:50.76), Joseph Benedetto in the hammer (44th, 57.90m/189-11) and Everett Smulders in the 800-meter (44th, 1:51.03).
 
• Several Rebel men's distance runners will make their 2019 outdoor debut this weekend in the 1500-meter, including SEC Indoor Freshman of the Year Mario Garcia Romo and All-Americans Derek Gutierrez and Waleed Suliman.
 
• The Rebels scored five First-Team All-Americans at the NCAA Indoor Championships from the men's distance medley relay (Cade Bethmann, Andrew Raspo, Griffin Riley and Mario Garcia Romo) and Derek Gutierrez in the mile.
 
• The Rebels return Honorable Mention All-Americans Parker Scott (3000-meter steeplechase) and Everett Smulders (1500-meter) from last outdoor season, as well as nine total NCAA East Region qualifiers.
 
HEAD COACH CONNIE PRICE-SMITH
• Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith is in her fourth season. Price-Smith, who was the head women's coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, is in her 18th season overall as a head coach.
 
• In four seasons at Ole Miss, Price-Smith has already mentored seven NCAA champions, 61 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 29 SEC Champions and several of the highest SEC and national team finishes ever at Ole Miss -- including the highest SEC Outdoor finish ever for the women in fifth place in 2018.
 
• Price-Smith's coaching staff all returns as well, with associate head coach Andre Scott (jumps, women's multis), assistant coach Anthony Acklin (sprints, hurdles), assistant coach Brian Porter (pole vault, javelin, men's multis), assistant coach John Smith (throws) and director of operations Sasha Leeth all returning for their fourth seasons at Ole Miss, with associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy (distance) entering his sixth year as a Rebel.
