Rebels Travel to West Point for Final Tune-Up Before SEC Championship

WEST POINT, Miss. – After traveling all across the country and even Mexico, the Ole Miss men's golf team stays in state for the final tournament before the SEC Championship next week. The Rebels will make the trek 94 miles southeast to West Point for the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (April 15-16) beginning on Monday.

Ole Miss will tee it up along with 14 other teams at Old Waverly Golf Club, which will be playing 7,000 yards and par 72. The field features two SEC foes in Mississippi State and No. 4 Vanderbilt. This will mark the seventh straight season Ole Miss has played in the event. The Rebels finished in third as a team last year, with Braden Thornberry picking up the individual medal.

Head coach Chris Malloy will be bringing seven Rebels to compete. Jackson Suber holds the No. 1 position, followed by Beau Briggs, Cecil Wegener, Josh Seiple and Jack Gnam. Brody Blackmon and Sarut Vongchaisit will play as individuals.

"We are eager to get back into tournament play and get some momentum heading into postseason play," Malloy said. "We are very familiar with this course, and I know that these guys are looking forward to the opportunity to play in our own state and in front of some familiar faces."

Suber holds the No. 1 spot for the first time in his Rebel career. The freshman is second on the team in stroke average (72.8) and is first in top-20 finishes with four. Suber was named SEC Freshman of the Week after his performance at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in late March, tying for 33rd individually, the second time he has paced the team in a tournament this season.

Briggs occupies the No. 2 role for Ole Miss. The senior leads the team in scoring average (71.82) and has three top-10 finishes during his final campaign. Briggs put together a top-25 finish last year at the event, going 71-73-78—222.

Wegener comes into the tournament as the only Rebel who has medaled so far this year, winning the All-American Intercollegiate in February. The Mississippi native has appeared in all nine events this season with three top-10's.

Seiple and Gnam round out the starting five for Ole Miss. Seiple finished tied for 51st last year at the event, while Gnam is making his first start in the lineup since the Marquette Intercollegiate in early October of last year.
Blackmon is making his second appearance of the season after a debut at the Lamkin San Diego Classic over spring break. Vongchaisit was tabbed the other individual role, having played in each tournament this spring for the Rebels.

The tournament gets underway Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. It will be an all-SEC group, as Ole Miss will be paired with Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
