Rebels Begin Postseason Play at Greystone Country Club
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 36 Ole Miss women's golf team heads to Birmingham, Alabama, for the SEC Championship beginning Wednesday.
The Rebels will battle the thirteen other schools from the Southeastern Conference at Greystone Golf and Country Club, which has hosted the conference championship the past seven years.
The 2019 event will mark the second consecutive year in which the championship will extend to a fourth and fifth day, with match play on Saturday and Sunday. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three days of the championship. The final round on Sunday will be televised live on SEC Network.
The Rebels are getting hot at the right time, having finished in the top-5 in each of the past two events, including a runner-up finish at The Bruzzy in Texas. Just this past weekend, Ole Miss upset No. 9 Florida in match play to finish fifth at Georgia's Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
"We are very excited to get out there and compete against our fellow SEC schools the next couple of days," head coach Kory Henkes said. "This team is very confident right now and we're ready for a great showing in Birmingham. Some of us are very familiar with this course, which will be a huge help because most of us are coming here for the first time."
The lineup is staying the same for the fourth straight tournament. Julia Johnson will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, Conner Beth Ball, Macy Somoskey, and Kennedy Swann.
Julia Johnson has been the No. 1 for the Rebels all year and the numbers speak for themselves. The sophomore ranks 11th in the conference in stroke average (72.86) and leads the team in top-10 finishes this season with five. Johnson put together a top-10 finish at her first ever conference tournament last year, finishing tied for 8th. Her final round 3-under 69 tied for the best round shot at the tournament and was just one of four rounds in the 60's recorded in Birmingham that week.
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay occupies the two-spot once again. The Taby, Sweden native has had a phenomenal freshman campaign this year, where she is second on the team in stroke average (74.5)
Conner Beth Ball has been in the top-3 of the lineup all spring. The sophomore has appeared in the lineup in every event this year and is second on the team with four top-10 finishes. Ball finished top-40 at least year's conference championship after a final round 1-over 73.
Macy Somoskey sees herself in the starting five for the fifth event in a row this spring. The freshman led the team in stroke play last week at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, shooting a 2-over 74.
Kennedy Swann rounds out the starting five. The junior transfer was steady in match play last week in Georgia, making a long par putt on No. 18 to seal the upset of the Florida Gators.
First round begins Wednesday morning with tee times for the Rebels starting at 8:50 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with Auburn and Florida.
