Freshman Finished Runner-Up, Paced Rebels at Old Waverly
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men's golfer Jackson Suber has been named SEC Freshman of the week after his performance at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Suber posted a 54-hole total of 70-71-65—206, tying his career low that was the third best in the tournament's history. This marks the fourth time an Ole Miss golfer has been named Freshman of the Week this spring, and second for Suber as he was honored the week of March 27 after his outing at the Hootie at Bulls Bay.
The freshman led the Rebels to a runner-up finish at Old Waverly, finishing above No. 4 Vanderbilt and the host Mississippi State. The Tampa, Florida, native's runner-up finish individually in the 84-man field was the second of his career, and he scored better than a pair of top-20 golfers according to Golfstat's national rankings.
Suber's performance included a bogey-free final round 7-under 65, a personal best that tied the tournament record for the lowest round in its seven-year history. He ranked second in par-4 scoring (-3), third in birdies (14), and fourth in par-5 scoring (-7) throughout the week.
In his first season as a Rebel, Suber has competed in all 10 tournaments, and his stroke average of 72.36 ranks second on the team. He has four top-10 finishes on his record, including a runner-up finish in his first collegiate event at the Ocean Course.
Suber and the Rebels return to the course for the SEC Championship (April 24-28) in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
