Men’s Tennis Starts SEC Tournament Second Round vs. No. 21 Alabama

OXFORD, Miss. –The Ole Miss Men's Tennis team begins postseason play at the SEC Championships Thursday against No. 21 Alabama, beginning at 2 p.m. CT in Gainesville, Fla. 
 
The Rebels and Crimson Tide received first-day byes and will compete in the Second Round as the 8 and 9 seeds, respectively.

LOOKING SHARP DOWN THE STRETCH
Ole Miss enters the SEC Tournament with a 16-11 mark and finished the regular season 8-3. The Rebels have accumulated four wins over Top-25 opponents and two in league play (then-No. 18 Alabama, then-No. 22 Georgia).
 
LAST TIME ON THE COURT
The Rebels went 1-1 on the road last weekend by defeating then-No. 36 LSU 4-3 on Friday before falling to then-No. 8 Texas A&M 7-0 Sunday. 
 
Junior Tim Sandkaulen provided the clincher on Friday.Sandkaulen's match came down to the third set after splitting two tiebreakers. He edged Shane Monroe, 6-3 to give the Rebels the victory. It was Sandkaulen's fourth clincher and first in SEC play this season.
 
LSU grabbed the doubles point and the early 1-0 advantage after prevailing on Courts 1 and 2.
 
Freshman Simon Junk then picked up his fourth SEC winner with a two-set singles decision, 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Tigers regained the lead shortly after with a two-set triumph of their own. This was the last time they would be ahead.
 
Sophomore Finn Reynolds continued the comeback push with a 6-2, 7-6 (0) decision, impressing in the tiebreak.
 
Veteran Filip Kraljevic overcame a defeat in the first set to give Ole Miss a 3-2 edge, winning the final two sets 6-3, 7-6 (1). Kraljevic won his fourth consecutive match, and fifth in his last six decisions.
 
LSU tied it once more with a winner on Court 3. Senior Fabian Fallert pushed then-No. 107 Boris Kozlov the full three sets, coming up just short.
 
The match rested on Sandkaulen's shoulders, who improved his dual record to 13-8 in the spring.
 
WE MEET AGAIN
Thursday will mark the third meeting this season between the Rebels and Crimson Tide with Ole Miss winning the first two duals. The first was a 4-2 triumph Feb. 22-23 at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., while the second was a 4-3 Rebel road win on March 16. The Tide were ranked No. 16 and No. 18, respectively, during those matches. 
 
CLINCH KING
Senior Fabian Fallert continues to reign as the undisputed 'Clinch King', registering six clinches this spring, two coming in SEC play (Georgia, Arkansas). Fallert clinched in three of the Rebels' Top 25 victories this season, and boasted a four-match win streak on two separate occasions this season.
 
RANKED REBS
Ole Miss moved up to No. 26 as a team after downing then-No. 36 LSU. The Rebels also boast two ranked pairs in No. 43 Fallert and Reynolds as well as No. 50 Kraljevic and Sandkaulen. Sandkaulen also possesses a No. 70 plaudit at first singles. 
 
OLE MISS IN THE SEC TOURNAMENT
  • Ole Miss has garnered three SEC Tournament titles (1997, 2008, 2009)
  • The Rebels are 35-26 overall in the tourney, dating back to 1990
  • The team is 22-7 in the opening match since 1990, including victories 11 of the last 12

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE
Alabama's (15-9, 5-7 SEC) resume includes ranked wins against Michigan, Texas Tech, LSU, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Arkansas this season. 
 
The Tide feature No. 46 Mazen Osama. Edson Ortiz owns a team-best 15-5 dual record. Osama and doubles teammate Patrick Kaukovalta have been impressive with a 13-7 spring clip, securing a No. 13 ranking as a duo.  
 
Ole Miss owns a five-match win streak against the Crimson Tide and are 3-0 against Alabama since 1990 at SECs (1997, 2013, 2016). 

UP NEXT
The winner of the Ole Miss-Alabama match will square off with the host, third-ranked and top-seeded Florida at 2 p.m. CT on Friday.
