LAST TIME ON THE COURT
With a virtual must-win situation at stake, the Rebels responded with a 4-2 victory Sunday, April 14 against then-No. 16 Texas A&M on Senior Day.
The Aggies earned the doubles point, but the Rebels showed toughness that did not relent throughout the match, carrying over into singles.
The first of four singles victories started in emphatic fashion as sophomore Sabina Machalova defeated then-No. 50 Katya Townsend in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Texas A&M regained the lead, but Ole Miss countered with three straight points for the eventual 4-2 triumph.
Junior Anna Vrbenska and Tea Jandric won in two sets. Jandric defeated then-No. 62 Jayci Goldsmith, 6-4, 6-1 for her fifth straight victory, including 11 of her last 12 decisions.
Janatova provided the final heroics after overcoming a first-set loss, rattling off 12 of the final 14 games (6-2, 6-0).
Prior to the match, Ole Miss recognized the accomplishments of seniors Allie Sanford and Jandric. The two have combined for over 145 career wins and have helped the Rebels advance to three consecutive NCAA appearances and their highest-ever team ranking (No. 3) last season.
The victory was the second ranked win of the season for Ole Miss after defeating then-No. 39 Auburn on March 17.
MATCH NOTES
Ole Miss enters the SEC Tournament coming off their second ranked win of the season, as the Rebels upset No. 16 Texas A&M in their home finale. The victory was their second straight over the Aggies and the first in Oxford since A&M joined the league in 2012.
Senior Tea Jandric enters the week on a five-match win streak. Earlier this spring she tallied the longest of her career at six, and boasts an impressive 4-1 record over ranked opponents this spring, including the fourth-ranked player in the country against Vanderbilt. Jandric's lone loss in league play came against Tennessee, snapping the six-match uptrend.
Junior Tereza Janatova brings the best record into College Station, boasting 24 wins on the year and 14 in dual match play. Her eight wins are also the best for the Rebels in SEC action. Usually one of the first to finish, Janatova provided spark last Sunday, clinching the Rebels 4-2 win over No. 16 Texas A&M, battling back from dropping her opening set to win in three, including a sweep in the finale.
Junior Anna Vrbenska suffered just her third and fourth career losses in SEC play this season, but carries five wins in the league, and also tallied a six-match win streak on the season, the longest of her career.
The Rebels face No. 24 Florida in the second round, the same school they began league play with this season. Tereza Janatova provided the lone win for the Rebels, a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
RANKED REBS
Jandric moved up one spot to No. 73 in the ITA rankings after her victory against then-No. 62 Jayci Goldsmith. Machalova returned to the rankings at No. 94 after her win over then-No. 50 Katya Townsend.
