Freshmen Come Up Clutch in Softball’s 3-0 Shutout of Southern Miss

4/24/2019 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Two swings of the bat were all the Rebels needed to set down Southern Miss in Wednesday night's midweek matchup as Ole Miss (34-12) shutout the Golden Eagles (28-17) at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, 3-0.

Starter Molly Jacobsen tossed three innings, allowing a single run and walk with four strikeouts in her short outing. With Jacobsen not pitching enough innings to qualify for the decision, sophomore Ava Tillmann picked up her eighth win with four innings in relief, scattering four hits and striking out a pair.

Behind some clutch hitting from a pair of freshmen, Ole Miss used a two-out rally in the second to garner an early lead. With two runners in scoring position and two outs on the board, Tate Whitley pulled a liner into the right-center field gap, clearing the bases with a triple. Mikayla Allee followed with a single to center, bringing home Whitley and extending the Ole Miss lead to 3-0 after two.

That was all the offense the Rebels would produce but with Jacobsen and Tillmann throwing darts in the circle, it was more than enough. The Golden Eagles would advance a runner into scoring position just twice in the game, with the Rebels working out of trouble both times.

Southern Miss' best chance to score came in the fifth, when Samantha Papp led off with a stand-up double and moved to third on Karley Nichols' infield single. However, Tillmann rolled a picture-perfect ball up the middle for the Rebs to turn two, with Allee fielding the ball, tapping second and firing to Brittany Finney at first to retire the side.

Junior outfielder Kaylee Horton put on a defensive show to close things out in the seventh. After opening the frame with a sliding catch for the first out, Horton gobbled up a hot shot to the outfield and threw a dime to Finney at first, producing the unconventional 9-1 putout to seal the win for the Rebels.

Quick Hits
• Ole Miss concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a perfect 13-0 record at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. Overall, the Rebels are 19-3 on their home field.
• The Rebs improve to 24-0 in 2019 when outhitting their opponent
Tate Whitley's two-run triple was Ole Miss' 19th of the season, extending the program-record set earlier this year.
Ava Tillmann has won each of her last seven decisions to improve to 8-2 for the season. It was the eighth appearance this season for the sophomore allowing no earned runs.
