Ole Miss Cranks Out Three Homers but Can’t Overcome Early 10-Run Deficit

LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 18 Ole Miss (25-10, 5-4 SEC) made a run at a comeback Friday night, but a 10-run deficit after three innings was too much to overcome against No. 22 Kentucky (24-13, 8-5 SEC) as the Wildcats earned an 11-4 win at John Cropp Stadium.

Molly Jacobsen took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in two complete innings. Ava Tillmann came on in relief for the final four frames, allowing five runs on 10 hits.

The game got off to an unfortunate start for the Rebels as Jenny Schaper led off with a bloop single and Abbey Cheek's sacrifice bunt attempt looped over Jacobsen's head for a tough-break single. After a strikeout for the first out, Alex Martens snuck a blooper inside the right line for an RBI double before Katie Reed laced another double off the left field wall to put the Wildcats up two early.

After a quick top of the second, Kentucky added to its lead in the home half. Schaper plated a run with a single to left and Alex Martens unloaded a three-run homer to right-center to push the Wildcat advantage to 6-0.

Four more UK runs came across in the fourth as Lauren Johnson registered an RBI infield single, Schaper doubled home another run and Cheek lifted a two-run home run to center field.

Facing a 10-run deficit, the Rebels began to claw their way back. Abbey Latham got things headed in the right direction in the fourth, crushing a solo home run off the scoreboard in left. With the run rule a factor in the fifth, Gabby Alvarez extended the game with a two-run bomb of her own to cut the Kentucky lead to seven.

Jessica Puk continued the comeback in the sixth with a leadoff homer down the left line. The Rebels went on to load the bases in the frame but couldn't produce the clutch hit to keep the momentum going.

Kentucky got one run back in the bottom of the sixth to regain a seven-run advantage and Ole Miss went down in order in the seventh to wrap things up in Lexington.

The Rebels will look to bounce back on Saturday, taking on the Wildcats in a rematch at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be available for streaming via SEC Network +.

Quick Hits
Kylan Becker extended her hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the fifth. It is tied for the third-longest streak in program-history.
• The Rebels hit three home runs for the third time this season, the most in a single game for Ole Miss in 2019. The Rebs have hit multiple long balls in each of their last three games.
Jessica Puk's home run in the sixth inning was her eighth of the season, giving the sophomore sole-possession of the team lead.
