Sandkaulen Set for NCAA Individual Tennis Championship
5/19/2019 | Men's Tennis
Junior Will Make Second Appearance at Nationals
ORLANDO, Fla. – The season continues for Ole Miss Men's Tennis junior Tim Sandkaulen with a national title up for grabs at the NCAA Individual Championship, beginning May 20 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Sandkaulen will face No. 30 Lucas Poullain of Florida State at 5 p.m. Monday in the First Round.
A two-time All-SEC selection, Sandkaulen boasted the second-most wins for the Rebels this school year, but led during the spring with a 13-10 clip. Four of his five wins in SEC play have come against ranked foes, including taking down Alabama's Mazen Osama twice to help propel the Rebels to two of their three Top-20 upsets.
The Monchengladbach, Germany product has carried an ITA Singles Ranking most of the spring, and boasted a career-high No. 15 rating during the fall campaign. He's tallied two separate four-match win streaks this spring, and his set up victory over Arkansas propelled the Rebels to a win on Senior Day. Sandkaulen provided the clinch for the Rebels against LSU during the final weekend of SEC play, his fourth clincher of the season.
Sandkaulen, the current No. 52 ITA ranked player, will bring added experience with him into this year's tournament. He fell to the No. 1 ranked and ITA Senior Player of the Year Martin Redlicki of UCLA a year ago. Redlicki also went on to claim one half of the doubles national title in 2018. Sandkaulen also joined Fabian Fallert and advanced to NCAA Doubles Round of 16 a season ago.
The program has found success at the NCAA Individual Championships. Ole Miss boasts a NCAA singles champion from 2009 – current assistant coach Devin Britton and doubles champion pair in 1995 – Mahesh Bhupathi and Ali Hamadeh.
All matches in the singles competition are best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships.
