Suber Fires Final Round 65 to Tie for Fourth Overall
MADISON, Wis. – The Ole Miss men's golf team fired a 10-under 278 as a team in the final round of the Badger Invitational to take third place in Madison. Entering the day in sixth place, the Rebels finished strong behind a final round 65 (-7) by sophomore Jackson Suber.
Ole Miss ended the tournament in red figures, finishing 6-under as a team (291-289-278—858). The Rebels made the turn at even par on the day and made 10 birdies on the back to move up the leaderboard late. Ole Miss was edged out by second place Kansas (286-282-288—856) by two strokes down the stretch, while Notre Dame took home the title at 22-under (283-285-274—842).
"I'm really proud of how these guys finished off the tournament," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We talk a lot about winning the final round in each tournament that we play, and we certainly did that today. We will get back and clean up some silly mistakes and be ready to go next week."
Suber fired a career-low 7-under 65 in the final round that earned him his fourth top-5 finish of his young career. He had a string of six-straight birdies to catch fire on the back nine, going bogey-free his last 11 holes. The sophomore finished 8-under for the tournament, going 69-74-65—208.
"Jackson really got it going on the back nine and showed what he is capable of," Malloy said. "This is just the start of what should be a great year for him."
Sarut Vongchaisit fired a final round 68 (-4) to finish in the top-10, a new career best. The sophomore went 71-73-68—212 to tie his 54-hole career-low score. Vongchaisit carded four birdies and an eagle to go with two bogeys on the final day after going bogey-free his first 16 holes.
Chip Getz shot a final round even-par 72 to finish tied for 36th, going 77-71-72—220. He countered three bogeys with three birdies, two of them coming on the par 5s.
After back-to-back 74s, Jack Gnam recorded a final round 1-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for 47th overall. Like the rest of the Rebels, he finished the tournament strong by playing the final eight holes 1-under without a bogey.
Brody Blackmon tied for 70th, going 80-71-76—227 (+11). After a tough start to his final round, the senior tallied three birdies and six pars for a 33 (-3) on the back nine.
Veeti Mahonen made his collegiate debut this week, tying for 29th as an individual. The freshman came out with a 2-under 70, before going 77-72 the final two days for a three-round total of 3-over 219.
The Rebels return to the course, Sept. 16-17, for the Windon Memorial in Lake Forest, Illinois.
