Tim Sandkaulen, 2019 vs. Auburn

Sandkaulen Swings into Sunday Championship

9/14/2019 | Men's Tennis

The senior will play for the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall Title at 10 a.m.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --   Senior Tim Sandkaulen has begun his final fall campaign much of the same way he finished his junior one- with success. He and a trio of underclassmen- sophomores Simon Junk and Jan Soren Hain, and freshman Lukas Engelhardt, competed in Day 2 of the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall Championships, hosted by Alabama.

Sandkaulen will play for the tournament title Sunday at 10 a.m., after a relatively swift decision over conference foe Finn Stodder of Tennessee (6-3, 6-2) and grinding out a three-set victory over South Alabama's Clement Marzol, who spent most of the 2019 spring in the ITA singles rankings.

Sandkaulen and Marzol were forced through a grueling first set tiebreaker, as Marzol emerged victoriously 6-7 (14), before Sandkaulen regrouped to pick up the final two sets with the same swiftness from earlier, 6-3, 6-2.

He will face the Tide's Riccardo Roberto, who triumphed over Engelhardt (7-5, 6-3) for a spot in the finals. Engelhardt found his way into the semifinals by way of victory over South Alabama's Loic Cloes (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).

Engelhardt will face Marzol in the consolation round, also slated Sunday for 10 a.m.

In the Houndstooth Singles Draw, Hain and Junk were also successful, each picking up their opening wins of the day. The two dropped semifinal matches, and would have faced each other in the consolation final. Instead, Hain will face South Alabama's Sebestien Collard, whom Junk defeated Friday, and Junk will take on his teammate in Martin Bugaj.
