Ole Miss registers fourth sweep of the season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ole Miss Volleyball (7-3) registered its seventh straight victory, and fourth sweep of the season Friday, downing Howard in Burr Gymnasium by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-13.
Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Anna Bair led the squad with 12 kills, finishing on a .345 hitting percentage. Senior Nayo Warnell, the conference's current Offensive Player of the Week, totaled seven kills on a .538 clip. She also posted seven blocks, while Bair added five. Warnell has now hit above .500 for the fourth-straight contest, guiding a Rebels' team that hit a season-high .337.
Senior Emily Stroup posted a team-best 13 digs, adding eight kills.
After surrendering the first point of the contest, the Rebels ignited for a quick five-point rally. After Howard evened things up at 7-7, Ole Miss turned in a 3-0 rally to build the lead at 10-7, and continued to add some cushion, courtesy of a trio of kills from Warnell, putting the Rebels up 16-12.
Ole Miss led by as many as six at 20-14, and powered through to the set victory after another trio of slams, this time from from Bair brought the squad through to 25-18.
A bit of back-and-forth ensued in the second frame, with the teams reaching a stalemate at 13-13 and forcing Ole Miss into an early huddle. Bair broke through with a big kill to put the Rebels back up 14-13, but the Bison evened things once again and took control after back-to-back kills from redshirt sophomore Marcelle Butler.
The stalemate continued, as the teams endured six consecutive ties from the 16 to 21 point marks. A Howard miscue put the Rebels up 22-21, and then a big rejection from Warnell added some cushion and gave Ole Miss a 23-21 advantage. Warnell was critical to the Rebels final few points, adding another block (this time teaming up with junior setter Lauren Bars), and sealing the set 25-22 for Ole Miss with a decisive final kill.
4-0 lead to start the 3rd before Howard chipped away, evening things at seven. Ole Miss quickly returned to control, building a four-point lead at 12-8 after back-to-back kills from senior Leah Mulkey. The Rebels continued to build an advantage, finishing the frame on an 18-6 run after a series of 3-0 runs.
Ole Miss cruised to their seventh straight victory, taking the set 25-13.
