Women’s Tennis Earns Marliss Gruver Invite Doubles Title

Janatova, Vrbenska Win Flight A Doubles Crown on Sunday
AUBURN, Ala. – Five Rebels picked up wins for the Ole Miss women's tennis team to conclude the Marliss Gruver Invitational, highlighted by Tereza Janatova and Anna Vrbenska's Flight A Doubles title on Sunday.
The Flight A finale had an all-Ole Miss flare as Janatova and Vrbenska dueled fellow teammates Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles. Both pairs won two matches Saturday to advance and guarantee a Rebel win.
On Sunday, seniors Janatova and Vrbenska defeated their teammates 6-1 to win the title in the first competition of the fall season.
In Flight B, Isolde de Jong and Victoire de Samucewicz were victorious in the third-place match. The freshmen duo finished the weekend 2-1, downing Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita of Kansas State 6-3.
Ole Miss found success on the singles courts to end the tournament. Janatova used a key first-round tiebreak to claim third place in Flight A and outduel Auburn's Madeline Meredith 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2. The Rebel upperclassman finished a combined 6-1 over three days for singles and doubles.
Machalova also finished the tournament a winner. She got by Vasiliki Karvouni of Kansas 6-3, 6-3 in a battle for fifth place.
Freshman de Samucewicz bested senior Melissa Pick of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-3 in the Flight B consolation final.
The Ole Miss women's tennis team will continue its fall calendar at the ITF Pro Circuit in State College, Pennsylvania. The event begins Monday and concludes next Sunday, Sept. 29.
