Rebels Sweep Houston Baptist for First 2019 Win

Ole Miss hit above .300 in a collectively strong offensive day
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Powered by stellar attacking, Ole Miss Volleyball picked up its first win of the young season Friday, sweeping Houston Baptist (25-22, 25-16, 25-11) on Day 1 of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic, hosted by Tulane.
The Rebels registered an above a .300 hitting efficiency, finishing the match on a .323 clip and hitting above .330 in both the first and third sets. The offense was led by freshman Anna Bair, who tallied her third consecutive double-digit kills affair, posting 14 on a .355 hitting percentage.
Senior Emily Stroup added 11 kills, while classmate Nicole Purcell led the back row with 19 digs.
The Rebels took control of the set early on, securing 9-of-11 points in the early stages of the opening stanza, including 3-0 and 4-0 rallies. The surge was led by Bair, who slammed three straight kills and tallied six points in a 13-point timespan.
The Huskies kept things interesting, scratching their way back to a one-point deficit as late as 22-21. Another kill by Bair, and a trio by veterans Stroup and Nayo Warnell sealed the set for the Rebs, handing them the 25-22 victory. Bair finished with seven kills on a .400 hitting clip during the frame.
After Bair delivered the tying kill at 5-5 in Set 2, the Rebels poured on four unanswered points, including a pair of service aces from junior transfer Izzy Guzik, making her Ole Miss debut.
The squad continued to cushion their lead, going up by as many as five points on three separate occasions, and then taking their biggest lead of the contest leading by 10 at set point before finishing at 25-16.
The Rebels ignited in the third, limiting the Huskies to just two kills all set and leading by as many as 13 points up 22-9. A kill from sophomore middle Aubrey Sultemeier sealed the victory at 25-11, handing Ole Miss their sweep of the season.
Sultemeier finished the contest with a team-high four blocks and five kills on a .300 percentage. In addition to Bair and Sultemeier, two other Rebels tallied above .300 clips in the match, with Warnell and classmate Leah Mulkey each posting career-highs at .571.
