Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Texas A&M

10/22/2020 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – In the Rebels first match of the 2020 season, Ole Miss (0-1, 0-1 SEC) welcomed the No. 7 ranked Texas A&M Aggies (3-0, 3-0 SEC) Thursday night to the Gillom Center in a four-set battle, ultimately falling 3-1.

Freshman right side hitter Samantha Schnitta totaled 10 kills in her debut in an Ole Miss uniform, while junior outside hitter Lauren Thompson eclipsed her career highs with nine kills and 13 digs.

In the first set, the Aggies came out early scoring the first two points of the match, before Thompson's kill from junior setter Gabby Easton got the Rebels on the board. In a back-and-forth first set that included six ties, Texas A&M began to pull away after a 5-0 run to make it 18-13, eventually winning the set 25-16.

The Rebels battled back in the second set, starting off with two quick kills from freshman outside hitter GG Carvacho and pulled within two of the Aggies to make it 8-10. A&M went on three separate 3-0 runs in the set to win 25-17.

A third set surge by Ole Miss with 13 kills helped the Rebels pick up their first set win of the night. Schnitta came out hot to start, with two kills to tie things up at 2-2. A 3-0 run gave the Rebels their largest lead of the night to that point at 9-5 early within the set. Two service aces from the Rebels allowed them to continue to stretch the advantage before a block from Carvacho gave Ole Miss a 17-7 lead. Back-to-back kills from junior middle blocker Aubrey Sultemeier and Schnitta put the Rebels up 22-16, and Thompson's eighth kill of the night sealed the set 25-17.

Opening up the fourth set quickly trailing by four, Ole Miss capitalized off of attack errors by Texas A&M to help them climb back up the scoreboard. Sophomore outside hitter Anna Bair scored two points straight for the Rebels off a kill and an ace to pull within three at 6-9. Later on, Schnitta added her eighth kill of the match at 11-15, inching closer towards A&M. This comeback trend continued with a block from freshman middle blocker Payton Brgoch to pull within two at 17-19.

With match point on the line, a service error by the Aggies gave the Rebels new life, followed by a Sultemeier kill off a senior setter Lauren Bars feed to tie the match up at 24. However, it was not enough as back-to-back points for the Aggies sealed the set at 26-24 and the match at 3-1.

Ole Miss will be back at it in action against Texas A&M in Oxford Friday night at 6 p.m. CT. The match will be airing nationally on the SEC Network.
