Rebels to Carry National Ranking into the Spring Season
OXFORD, Miss. – After playing its best golf of the fall, behind medalist honors from Jackson Suber, the Ole Miss men's golf team earned a spot in the top 25 heading into the spring. Golfstat ranked the Rebels as the No. 17 team in the country following the team's three-tournament fall season.
"For our guys to finish the fall where they are, after the start we got off to, says everything to me about who we are as a team," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Nothing will hold this group down and that bodes well for the championship season."
Playing in three tournaments against fellow members of the Southeastern Conference, Ole Miss got off to a rough start with a 14-place finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 5-7). However, the Rebels bounced back and improved their play by taking eighth at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate (Oct. 25-27). During that tournament, three Rebels (Veeti Mahonen, Jack Gnam and Brett Schell) posted the lowest 54-hole scores of their respective careers. Mahonen made 19 birdies throughout the week to lead the field, helping him tie for eighth with a 9-under 204 (67-68-69).
Ole Miss continued to leapfrog SEC opponents, wrapping up the fall by placing fifth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate (Nov. 8-10). A final round 274 put the Rebels at 6-under for the tournament (279-281-274—834). Both 18-hole and 54-hole team totals marked the fifth-best in program history. Securing his first victory as a Rebel, Suber fired a final round 66 (-4) to erase a three-shot deficit and finish in a tie atop the leaderboard at 12-under. Suber's three-round total of 198 (67-65-66) tied Braden Thornberry for the lowest 54-hole score in school history.
Gnam posted a team-best 70.33 stroke average during the fall, playing in two of the three tournaments. Mahonen, Schell, Suber and Sarut Vongchaisit cracked the Ole Miss lineup for all three tournaments, while Cecil Wegener competed in the season opener. Gnam and Suber fired the low rounds of the fall as both Rebels shot 65. In his first round of the season, Gnam carded his 65 for the best round of his career. Suber's 65 occurred in round two of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, vaulting the sophomore up the leaderboard on his way to becoming medalist.
While the spring schedule has not been set yet, the Rebels will bring their national ranking into the championship season.
