Rebels Post 4,679 Points in Texas on Saturday
FORT WORTH, Texas – Sometimes competing against the best brings out the best, and that's exactly what happened for the No. 7 Ole Miss rifle team as the Rebels posted a season-high 4679 points inside the TCU Rifle Range on Saturday.
Defending national champions and host No. 2 TCU won the match, 4708-4679, but the Rebel trio of junior Abby Buesseler, freshman Kristen Derting and senior Alana Kelly all recorded career highs to power Ole Miss to its third-best score in program history.
This is the third time this season the squad has reset the No. 3 mark in the school record book after shooting a 4674 on Nov. 2 and a 4676 on Jan. 17. Saturday's strong team performance increased the Rebels' NCAA top-three-score qualification average fired in three separate locations to 4676.33.
The Rebels also managed the third-most points all-time to begin the day for smallbore with a 2323. Buesseler finished with a personal-best 588 points, which put her just one point behind Ali Weisz' Ole Miss record set back in 2015. Buesseler also tied the best standing school mark (196), dating back to the 2015-16 season.
Ole Miss came out of the gates focused as four Rebels set or tied new career marks in the day's first event, kneeling. Buesseler and Derting ended smallbore particularly strong in standing with the 196 and a 195, respectively. Derting, a Salem, Oregon, native posted a career-high 582 smallbore and 1170 aggregate.
