Rebels Drop Heartbreaker 4-3 To Baylor Saturday

2/1/2020 | Women's Tennis

Ole Miss remains at home for a pair of matches next weekend

OXFORD, Miss. --  Senior Tereza Janatova remained perfect in dual match play Saturday, winning her sixth consecutive match for Ole Miss Women's Tennis (4-2), but it wasn't enough for the Rebels, who dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the undefeated Bears of Baylor (4-0)  at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.

Janatova opened both sets with momentum, taking the first three games of each to build a commanding lead and triumphed with identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.

Ole Miss entered singles with the advantage, after Janatova and her partner, classmate Anna Vrbenska, rallied from a 4-4 stalemate to take the final two games and hand the Rebels the doubles point. The duo blanked the Bears in the final game, finishing with a beautifully placed short volley from Janatova for the clinching point.

The veteran duo of junior Sabina Machalova and senior Alexa Bortles provided the setup in doubles for the Rebs, taking their first five games and winning deuce point in the final game for a 6-1 decision.

Baylor got on the board with a win at Court 6 in singles, but Vrbenska and Janatova quickly regained the lead, finishing within seconds of each other to put Ole Miss one point away from clinching.

Vrbenska was also strong in her performance, rallying from a 40-love game to keep perfection intact, registering a flawless second set.

With a 3-1 lead, a third set looked eminent for at least one of the three remaining Rebels in Bortles, Machalova, and freshman Kelsey Mize

Mize prevailed, winning deuce point of her second set to take it 7-5 and force a third and what proved to ultimately be final, as Machalova and Bortles dropped tough battles to even the score at 3-3.

Down a pair of games, Mize ripped a backhand on deuce point to come within one at 4-5, and then won the succeeding game to keep the battle alive at 5-5 before ultimately falling to the Bears' junior, Kris Sorokolet, as she completed the comeback for Baylor.

AT THE NET WITH… HEAD COACH MARK BEYERS
"Yesterday we won a close match, and then today we lost a close match… We still did a lot of things really well. We played better doubles and won that point against a good Baylor team and some kids play really well. I think Anna [Vrbenska] and Tereza [Janatova] played some of the best matches they've played.. We had opportunities on Sabina's [Machalova] and Alexa's [Bortles] courts to push to three sets, and then that would obviously take away some of the pressure from Kelsey [Mize] having to be the only one out there, but you know, we couldn't quite get to that point…"

"And it's tough, being a freshman in that position. That kid is a very experienced player and Kelsey did just great. She will learn from this and she's going to be alright. Looking back on the weekend, there are a lot of things to be positive about, a lot to look forward to, and a lot to be excited about. We have a few more nonconference matches before SEC starts, and we need to keep putting in the work and win some of those matches."
