BUESSELER NCAA BOUND
Ole Miss rifle junior Abby Buesseler earned her shot to compete against the nation's best after being named an at-large individual for the NCAA Rifle Championships in smallbore, announced by the NCAA on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

A total of nine at-large athletes not on an NCAA qualifying team earned a spot in the national competition (five in smallbore, four in air rifle) held March 13-14 in Lexington, Kentucky. Buesseler fired a team-high 583 during the Rebels' NCAA Qualifier match on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Stacy, Minnesota, native has remained steady all season long, averaging 582.7 points per match in the event and ranking 11th nationally.

She tallied a season-high 588 total on Feb. 1 at TCU, which sits one point shy of the team record set by Ali Weisz in 2015. Buesseler is also on pace to surpass the program's single-season smallbore average set by Shannon Wilson (2005-06, 579.2 average). Additionally, Buesseler tied the team air rifle record with a 597 and bettered the aggregate Rebel mark with an 1183 on Nov. 2.

The Ole Miss rifle program has had at least one student-athlete appear in 13 of the last 15 championships, dating back to the 2005-06 season when the Rebels advanced as a team.

NATIONALLY RANKED REBELS
Senior Alana Kelly, freshman Claire O'Neel and Buesseler have led the Rebels this season with some of the highest averages in the nation. Below is where the trio and Ole Miss as a team ranks among the NCAA's best.

Smallbore: Ole Miss (6th, 2312.8); Buesseler (11th, 582.7); Kelly (32nd, 577.5)
Air Rifle: Ole Miss (7th, 2355.9); Buesseler (31st, 589.1); Kelly (33rd, 588.9); O'Neel (34th, 588.9)
Aggregate: Ole Miss (6th, 4668.7); Buesseler (16th, 1171.8); Kelly (29th, 1166.4)

TIME FOR A NEW RECORD BOOK
Ole Miss has been extremely consistent this season. The Rebels have fired seven of the program's top-10 all-time scores thus far, ranging from 4679 to 4669 points.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Rebels finished sixth out of nine teams with 4648 points at the 2019 GARC Championships, held in Akron, Ohio. Then-freshman Erin Walsh and was the top Rebel shooter for smallbore (580) and air rifle (590).

West Virginia's Morgan Phillips will look to defend her smallbore individual title, while the Mountaineers will look for their 11th consecutive league trophy. A new individual winner will be crowned in air rifle as West Virginia's Ginny Thrasher competed in her final league match last season. A total of five teams that qualified for the NCAA Rifle Championships will be in action, and all GARC programs are ranked No. 13 or better.

ABOUT THE GARC
In 1997, four schools came together with the goal of promoting the sport of rifle on the collegiate level. With an emphasis on ways to increase the awareness of shooting, those institutions – Jacksonville State, Kentucky, West Virginia and Xavier – took the first step by chartering the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC). League competition officially began with the 1997-98 season. Ole Miss became a member of the GARC in 2001-02, joining the four original schools in one of the strongest rifle conferences in the nation.

The sport has grown over time, with the GARC taking a lead on the national scene. Since its inception, the GARC has had 10 national champions – West Virginia with seven, Kentucky with two, and Army earning one.

A total of nine teams claim conference ties in 2019-20, including Ole Miss, Army, Akron, Kentucky, Memphis, Navy, NC State, Nebraska, and West Virginia.

UP NEXT
Buesseler will represent the Rebels in smallbore at the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, March 13. The smallbore national competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
