Ole Miss Fired 2313 Points on Day 1 of League Competition in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Ole Miss rifle freshman Kristen Derting finished sixth in her GARC Championships debut against some of the strongest competition in the country at the Larry O. Finch Center on the University of Memphis campus Friday.

The Rebels sit sixth as a team behind a tight pack of teams with 2313 points after Day 1 of smallbore action and will return to compete in air rifle on Saturday.

Derting earned the right to advance in the eight-shooter finals with a team-high 582, tying her career best. After an opening seven, Derting quickly shook off any initial nervousness and found her groove.

The Salem, Oregon, product proceeded to fire 19 straight 10s to close out kneeling with 197 points. It marked the second-highest Rebel kneeling score since at least the 2015-16 season. Derting would then string together 11 more 10s to finish prone with a 198.

Advancing to the finals was decided on Derting's very last shot. Her final 10 and 32 center shots gave her the edge over several other shooters who finished with identical 582 totals.

The finals presented a true test of smallbore prowess and endurance. The top eight competitors fired 15 shots of kneeling followed by 15 shots of prone. Scores in the finals included decimal points.

Derting fired 302.4 points through kneeling and prone before adding 97.8 more after 10 shots of standing. She was able to survive the first cut, which eliminated two challengers. However, Derting's next shot was not enough to advance further, but she was proud of her overall performance.

"I was really nervous going in because it was my first collegiate final, but I was really happy to be able to see that my work in the past few weeks has paid off," Derting said. "And especially to do it at GARC and making the final and then doing well here."

Nebraska junior Emily Cheramie was the individual smallbore champion, besting Kentucky freshman Mary Tucker. In the team event, Kentucky fired a match-high 2326 points to edge West Virginia by three points. The Mountaineers are seeking their 11th consecutive GARC title.

Sophomore Erin Walsh (579), junior Abby Buesseler (577), and senior Alana Kelly (575) completed the Rebel scoring. Walsh used a season-high 193 in kneeling, while Kelly fired a career-high tying 199 in prone to provide key depth on Friday.

Competition wraps up on Saturday as the teams switch over to air rifle. The first of three relays begin at 8 a.m. CT, with another eight-shooter final ending the day at 2:15 p.m.
