Softball Drops Opening Day Doubleheader

2/7/2020 | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ole Miss fell behind early in both of its games on opening day and was unable to complete the comeback in either affair, dropping results to Louisville and NC State at the NFCA D1 Leadoff Classic.

Tate Whitley went 3-for-7 on the day with a double, while Abbey Latham registered a knock in two of her six at-bats. In the circle, junior Ava Tillmann made a pair of appearances out of the bullpen, combining for 2.2 scoreless innings.

GAME ONE | vs. Louisville
Ole Miss nearly pulled a seventh-inning comeback but couldn't quite finish things out in the early game against Louisville, falling 4-2 in the season opener.

Molly Jacobsen took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out four. Tillmann came in for one hitless inning of relief.

After Louisville opened scoring with a solo home run in the second, Ole Miss answered to tie in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a muffed catch at first base that allowed pinch runner Kelsha Loftin to slide home safely.

However, the Cardinals immediately responded, scratching two more across to regain the lead. The first run came home on a well-executed double steal, with UL tacking on anther on a softly hit single in front of home plate.

The Cardinals then added another run of insurance in the 6th when Caitlin Ferguson took the first pitch of the frame over the left field wall for a solo shot.

Down to their final outs, the Rebels mounted a comeback in the seventh. Tate Whitley got things started with a bunt single, advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring on Mikayla Allee's RBI single. Walks issued to Abbey Latham and Autumn Gillespie loaded the bases and Gabby Alvarez made solid contact with two outs but UL pitcher Chardonnay Harris knocked down the liner and threw over to third to end the threat and the game.

GAME TWO | vs. NC State
In a game that was in many ways eerily similar to the earlier matchup of the day, Ole Miss was again unable to climb out of an early hole, having its seventh inning comeback thwarted as NC State defeated the Rebels 3-2

Savannah Diederich was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Ava Tillmann made her second relief appearance of the day and kept the Wolfpack scoreless over 1.2 frames.

The majority of the action in the game came in the second frame, where NC State struck for three runs. Wolfpack catcher Sam Sack got the offense started with an RBI single to center, followed by a two-run home run by Apri Visser.

The Rebels responded in their half of the inning to cut into the NC State lead, with freshman Paige Smith cashing in her first collegiate hit for an RBI, driving in Autumn Gillespie from second.

The two sides traded zeroes for the following innings until the bottom of the seventh, when Ole Miss made a charge at turning the game on its head. A pair of throwing errors for NC State put runners at second and third before another error at third base allowed Mikayla Allee to come home and bring the Wolfpack lead to just one. Nyomi Jones stepped up a nearly snuck in a liner to right but a diving grab by the first baseman robbed Jones of a hit and Ole Miss of the tying run.

The Rebels will reset and return to action on Saturday, taking on Illinois and Notre Dame at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. For live coverage options, visit OleMissSports.com.
