Braden Forsyth Named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week

Rebel Closer Earned Saves in Three of Four Rebel Wins this Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third straight week to open the 2020 season, an Ole Miss Rebel landed on the Southeastern Conference weekly baseball honors.

Ole Miss closer Braden Forsyth was named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The sophomore out of Coldwater, Mississippi, made three appearances on the week, earning the save each time. He totaled 3.1 innings pitched with no runs allowed on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Forsyth is the first Rebel to earn three saves in a week since Parker Caracci saved three straight games during the 2019 SEC Tournament. Caracci also accomplished the feat in 2018, earning a midweek save against Southern Miss and a pair of saves against Arkansas to earn SEC Pitcher of the Week honors as well.

Like his predecessor, Forsyth was critical in high-leverage situations, starting with a midweek save in a one-run win over Southern Miss. He allowed a walk and a single, giving the Golden Eagles runners at the corners with just one out, but Forsyth responded with back-to-back strikeouts to seal the 4-3 victory.

The Meridian Community College transfer wasn't needed in Friday's 6-2 win over High Point in the Keith LeClair Classic, but he was Saturday at No. 17 ECU. He let the leadoff man on base via a walk before nothing one strikeout. Then, it looked as though he got the double play ball he needed to end it, but an errant throw on the turn put the tying run in scoring position with two down. However, Forsyth again got a key ground ball, this time to Cael Baker at first base, and the pair completed the 3-1 putout to give the Rebels a 2-1 win.

On Sunday, Forsyth entered with runners at the corners and two down in the eighth inning with the Rebels holding onto a four-run lead. He promptly induced a lineout to escape the jam. In the ninth, Indiana put one man aboard with a one-out single, but Forsyth again responded, getting the ground ball double play to end it, giving Ole Miss a 3-0 sweep in the Keith LeClair Classic, as well as its 10th straight win.

Forsyth joined Cael Baker (SEC Co-Player of the Week, Week 1) and Doug Nikhazy (SEC Pitcher of the Week, Week 2) as the third Rebel to earn an SEC honor this year. Ole Miss is the only team in the conference to earn a weekly honor in all three weeks this season. Forsyth is also the only reliever to earn Pitcher of the Week honors so far this year.

Ole Miss returns to action Tuesday to host Memphis. The Rebels and Tigers are set for a 6:30 p.m. CT first pitch at Swayze Field and on SEC Network+.
