Softball Drops SEC Opener, 9-1, at No. 23 Missouri

Late Tiger Rally Too Much to Overcome for Ole Miss
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ole Miss held the lead for the majority of the game Friday night at No. 23 Missouri but a late Tiger rally turned the tide, saddling the Rebels with a 9-1 loss in six innings in their SEC opener at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Molly Jacobsen took the loss in the circle, taking a shutout into the fifth before running into trouble. The senior surrendered five runs on five hits and five walks, striking out nine in 4.1 innings. Ava Tillmann came on and collected two outs in relief, allowing one run on two hits, while Savannah Diederich surrendered three runs on two hits and a walk without an out.
Ole Miss (12-11, 0-1 SEC) struck early, taking a first-inning lead on Jessica Puk's RBI double down the left field line, bringing pinch runner Kelsha Loftin around from second.
However, after that an inability to cash in with runners in scoring position kept the Rebel lead tenuous at a single run. Ole Miss left nine runners on base in the first four innings of the game, twice stranding the bases loaded.
In the fifth, after knocking on the door themselves a couple of times, the Tigers made the Rebels pay. Missouri (17-6, 1-0 SEC) racked up five hits in the frame to score six runs, three coming home on Cayla Kessinger's bases-clearing triple down the right line.
With the game flipped on its head, Missouri registered an RBI double and a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the run-rule into effect.
QUICK HITS
• Jessica Puk went 2-for-2 with a single and a double. It was Puk's team-high eighth multi-hit game and third in a row.
• In her last nine games, Puk is batting .545 with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored.
• Molly Jacobsen's nine strikeouts was one short of her career high, set earlier this season against Colorado State.
