Men’s Golf Heads to California for Lamkin San Diego Classic

3/8/2020 | Men's Golf

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 42 Ole Miss men's golf team heads to California for the Lamkin San Diego Classic (March 9-10), making it the fourth straight season the Rebels have been to the tournament in suburban San Diego.

The two-day event will take place at San Diego Country Club, which will be playing 7,033 yards and par 72.

The Rebels will compete against the host school San Diego, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 11 Arizona, No. 18 BYU, No. 19 Colorado State, No. 28 San Diego State, No. 33 California, No. 37 Tennessee, Air Force, UC Davis, Colorado, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, St. Mary's (CA), Sam Houston State and Santa Clara.

The travel party remains the same from Ole Miss' first two spring trips. Jackson Suber will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Sarut Vongchaisit, Charlie Miller, Veeti Mahonen, and Jack Gnam. Brody Blackmon will play as an individual.

"This is an extremely quick turnaround from our previous tournament, which is probably a good thing," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Last week we struggled a bit, so I know that these guys are ready to get back into tournament play and have a good showing."

Suber, back playing as the No. 1, is ninth in the SEC in stroke average (71.00) and has led the Rebels on the leaderboard in four out of the seven tournaments this season. The sophomore is looking to bounce back from a rare struggle at the competitive Cabo Collegiate, tying for 69th overall.

Vongchaisit has appeared in the top-three of the lineup in every outing this season. He is second on the team in stroke average (71.81), ranked 23rd in the conference.

Miller is coming off an even par performance at the Cabo Collegiate, tying for 22nd after shooting a 213 (71-69-73). The sophomore has appeared in the lineup three times this season, and has finished par-or-better in all three.

Mahonen has appeared in every event so far as a freshman. He is the eighth-ranked freshman in the conference in terms of scoring average (72.38).

Gnam rounds out the starting five for the Rebels, coming off a tie for 26th (69-74-71) at the Cabo Collegiate.

The Rebels will play 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with UC Davis, Long Beach State and No. 37 Tennessee.
