Mitchell Takes NCAA Weight Throw Lead at Day One of Commodore Indoor

1/15/2021 | Track and Field

Sophomore Jasmine Mitchell Won at NCAA-Leading 21.57m (70-09.25)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore All-American Jasmine Mitchell picked up her 2021 season right where her freshman campaign left off, leading Ole Miss track & field at Day One of Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor on Friday night.

Mitchell – the reigning SEC runner-up and a native of Hazel Crest, Illinois – wasted no time, breaking the 21-meter barrier on her first attempt of the season before topping out at an NCAA-leading 21.57m (70-09.25) on her fourth attempt of the night. Mitchell was the only one in competition above 21 meters, outpacing her teammate and fellow sophomore Jalani Davis by nearly three feet for the win. Mitchell earned All-American honors after qualifying for the national meet as a freshman in 2020 at her career-best heave of 22.23m (72-11.75).

Davis' runner-up finish to Mitchell was no small feat, a three-foot PR of 20.82m (68-03.75) that stands No. 2 in the NCAA this year behind Mitchell as well as No. 6 all-time at Ole Miss. Senior and additional Rebel All-American Deborah Bulai took fourth overall at 19.56m (64-02.25), currently No. 5 in the NCAA this season.

In the men's weight throw, junior Joseph Benedetto led the way with a runner-up finish at 19.80m (64-11.50) – the No. 6 throw in the NCAA at this early point of the season. Sophomore Joseph Lanham was right behind him in third place at a near four-foot PR of 18.14m (59-06.25) that moves him up to No. 13 all-time at Ole Miss.

The Rebels also received an event win from freshman Ukurugenzi Kojo in the men's high jump, who won at the 14th-best clearance in school history at 1.95m (6-04.75). Sophomore Cory Meek took second at a PR height of 1.85m (6-00.75).

Senior All-American jumper Allen Gordon sat out the high jump Friday night but took runner-up in the men's long jump, opening the year at 7.11m (23-04.00).

Ole Miss resumes competition Saturday morning (Jan. 16) with the women's shot put at noon CT.
