Garcia Romo Shatters 3K Record, Smulders Becomes Fourth Rebel to Run Sub-4 Mile
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field had a spectacular day to close out its stay at the Razorback Invite, breaking two school records and crossing another historic barrier at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Saturday.
The Rebel men finished third overall in the team standings with 73 points behind Oregon (117) and No. 1 Arkansas (116), while leading No. 22 Georgia (64) and No. 10 USC (30). The Ole Miss women finished tied with Colorado for sixth place at 27 points.
One day after a historic performance by the men's distance medley relay squad on Friday night, it was again the Rebel distance runners making noise on the track. Junior Mario Garcia Romo put together a bombastic race in the men's 3K, finishing fourth and clocking a monstrous 17-second personal best to shatter the school record with a time of 7:48.40. Garcia Romo, the reigning SEC cross country champion, toppled Robert Domanic's 2016 record of 7:54.58 by more than six full seconds, and he currently ranks fifth in the NCAA.
If not for Garcia Romo's heroics, All-American senior Waleed Suliman would have broken Domanic's record by one-hundredth of a second with his sixth-place time of 7:54.57. Cole Bullock nearly broke the eight-minute barrier as well in his first collegiate track race, finishing seventh at 8:00.13 – the seventh-best time in school history.
Senior Everett Smulders joined rarified company as well after a historic day in the men's mile. Smulders became the fourth Rebel to ever break the four-minute barrier in the mile with a three-second PR of 3:58.93, the fourth-best in school history and No. 4 currently in the NCAA. Smulders joins the likes of All-Americans Suliman (3:56.78, 2019), Sean Tobin (3:58.28, 2018) and Derek Gutierrez (3:58.55, 2019) in the sub-four club. Additionally, Smulders is the 565th American to ever shatter the iconic four-minute mark, the first of which was Cal's Don Bowdon in 1957 (3:58.7).
Sophomore Loral Winn had herself a day in the women's edition of the mile race. Just two weeks after senior Anna Elkin set the Ole Miss record at 4:46.23, Winn took the record for herself on Saturday with her sixth-place time of 4:45.60. Her time today was a six-second PR that ranks 19th in the NCAA, and also is the latest in an impressive progression in the mile for Winn. Her freshman season PR was 4:58.92, and two weeks ago at Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor she clocked a six-second PR of 4:52.79 to jump to 13th on the Ole Miss all-time list.
The Rebel men earned a win in the 800-meter from Baylor Franklin, who was fresh off running a leg for the Ole Miss DMR on Friday night. Franklin won on a PR of 1:48.59, improving on his spot at No. 6 all-time at Ole Miss and No. 5 in the NCAA this season.
Ole Miss newcomer Sintayehi Vissa, a transfer from Division II Saint Leo University, opened her Rebel career in splendid fashion, running the fastest 800-meter time by a Rebel since 2017. Vissa finished fourth overall at a six-second PR of 2:06.45, the fourth-best time in Ole Miss history and currently No. 11 in the NCAA.
In the field, Ole Miss was paced by a career day from sophomore Lyndsey Reed in the women's pole vault. Reed finished third overall at a PR height of 4.15m (13-07.25), improving on her spot of No. 4 all-time at Ole Miss and pushing her into a tie for No. 17 in the NCAA this season.
Ole Miss will travel next to South Carolina on Feb. 5-6 for the South Carolina Invite.
