Rebels Drop First Match of 2020-21 Season

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – No. 3 Ole Miss rifle improved its three-score average, firing the third best score in program history, in their first setback this season against No. 4 West Virginia.

The two teams went head-to-head in one relay Sunday morning. The Rebels team score of 4713 wasn't enough to get past the Mountaineers team score of 4737. It marked the first GARC conference and regular season loss of the season for Ole Miss.

Lea Horvath paced the Rebels for the fourth consecutive match. The freshman turned in another impressive mark of 1185 to place third overall. Abby Buesseler eclipsed the 1180 mark for the first time this season, totaling an 1181. Kristen Derting matched her score with 1181 of her own.

After smallbore, the Mountaineers held a 2351-2346 advantage despite three Rebel counters firing scores of 587 or better. The mark of 2346 was also the third best smallbore performance in school history. Individually, Buesseler tied her career-high with a 588 and Derting also fired an identical score. Horvath finished just a point behind with a 587, and junior Erin Walsh turned in a 583. The two shot perfect prone scores along the way. Claire O'Neel rounded out the scoring for the counters with a 578.

Ole Miss went on to fire a 2367 in air rifle. Horvath fired a 598 a day after posting the 12th perfect score in NCAA history. Derting continues her impressive shooting with a 593. Walsh turned in a 589, and O'Neel finished with a mark of 587. Not factoring into the team scoring was Buesseler and Gratz with strong scores of 593 and 590, respectively.

West Virginia fired an impressive 4737 (2351 in smallbore and 2386 in air rifle), its best score at home this season. Jared Eddy and Akihito Shimizu paced the Mountaineers with scores of 1190 and 1186, respectively.

Following the conclusion of the match, the Rebels and West Virginia participated in a friendly air rifle final. Simulating a high-intensity conference championship environment, four participants from each team toed the line. Horvath earned the silver spot with a score of 250.4, 1.3 points behind Calista Smoyer of WVU.

Ole Miss returns to Oxford, where it will host Memphis on Feb. 13.
