Suber Holds on for Third Career Individual Tournament Win
NASSAU, Bahamas – The Ole Miss men's golf team and senior Jackson Suber pulled off a clean sweep of the team and individual championships at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational on Sunday.
The Rebels, who ended their tournament with a third round team score of 279 (-9), finished their tournament with a three-day score of 283-276-279–838 (-26), the sixth-lowest 54-hole total in school history. Ole Miss captured its seventh tournament title under head coach Chris Malloy, the first since the team's victory at the 2018 Hootie at Bulls Bay.
Ole Miss dominated the field, leading the way in both par-4 scoring (+8) and par-5 scoring (-28). The margin of victory, which ended up 11 strokes ahead of East Tennessee State, was the largest margin of victory the Rebels have had in a tournament win since their 14-stroke victory at the 2017 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
"I'm proud of the way these guys finished their rounds each day," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Today we got off to a great start but really struggled midway through the round. However, they were able to refocus and finish like a champion. Winning is hard to do in our sport. Winning is also contagious and I look for them to build on this and take the same mindset into the spring semester."
Capturing his third career individual medalist honors and first of his 2021-22 campaign was senior Jackson Suber, who ended his tournament weekend with a three-day score of 68-67-70–205 (-11).
Suber's tournament performance was an impressive one, as he finished tied for first in par-4 scoring (-2) and second in par-5 scoring (-9) to help lead to his lifting of the individual championship trophy. His three-day score of 205 now sits as a team-best on the 2021-22 season.
Not far behind Suber on the individual leaderboard was sophomore Brett Schell, who capped off a red hot start to his fall season by finishing with yet another career-best showing. He ended his tournament in Nassau tied for seventh at 4-under (71-70-71—212).
Schell at one point saw himself as high as second on the individual leaderboard on the day, thanks in large part to an eagle on Hole 2 to start off his round on the right foot. Schell was the fourth different Rebel to make an eagle at the Ocean Club on the weekend, and the third to do so on the par-5 second.
Finishing off a great climb up the individual leaderboard was Evan Brown, who despite starting his weekend with a 2-over round on Friday, bounced back to go 5-under over his last 36 holes and tie for 11th. Brown's three-day score of 213 (74-68-71) is a new personal best in his time with the Rebels, marking his first career Top-20 finish at Ole Miss.
Competing in his first tournament of the season with the Rebels, Jack Gnam's late push in rounds two and three rewarded the senior with a 29th place finish at the White Sands. Gnam's third round score of 67 (-5) saw a total of six birdies and was the lowest final round score for Ole Miss on the day.
Rounding out play for the Rebels was Kye Meeks, who ended his tournament by shooting a 75 (+3) to finish with a three-day score of 219 (+3) and tied for 38th overall.
Having capped off their fall season with a victorious weekend in Nassau, Ole Miss now enters their winter break. The first competition of the Rebels' spring schedule is the Puerto Rico Intercollegiate, which is set to begin Feb 13 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
