Ole Miss Women’s Tennis Falls 4-3 to No. 20 Tennessee

Doubles Decision Point Was Deciding Factor in Rebels’ Loss
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (5-5, 1-3 SEC) fell to No. 20 Tennessee (7-4, 1-2 SEC) in a competitive match on Sunday.
In singles, Ole Miss held a 3-2 match lead prior to Tennessee's comeback victory. With the match tied at 3-3, Lillian Gabrielsen was defeated by Tennessee's No. 85 Johanna Silva 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Volunteers the win. Gabrielsen's match was the only of the day to go to three sets.
Down 2-0 overall, the Rebels won three matches to take a 3-2 lead over the Volunteers. At No. 2 singles, Tiphanie Fiquet defeated No. 118 Carly Briggs 6-4, 6-4. Tereza Janatova also won 6-4, 6-4, versus Tennesse's No. 52 Rebeka Mertena. Janatova earned her first ranked victory of the season and is 7-1 in duals matches. Anna Vrbenska won 6-2, 7-5 over Tennessee's Tenika McGriffin at No. 4 singles.
Sabina Machalova fell 7-5, 7-6 (6) to Eleonora Molinaro in a tight contest. The overall match was tied 3-3 after Machalaova's loss. Kelsey Mize lost in straight sets at No. 6 singles to give Tennessee a 2-0 lead to open the match.
In doubles, the Rebels earned one win as the Volunteers claimed the opening decision point. After splitting Courts No. 1 and No. 2, Fiquet and Gabrielsen fell in the deciding match, 7-5, to Briggs and Callie Creath. No. 24 Alexa Bortles and Machalova won for the Rebels on Sunday and improved to 5-4 in duals this season. The doubles decision point proved decisive as the Rebels and Volunteers split singles 3-3.

Ole Miss will begin a string of four road conference matches at LSU on Friday, March 5. The Tigers currently rank No. 19 in the nation.
