Rebels Upset Tigers on the Road
BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 31 Ole Miss (6-5, 2-3 SEC) defeated No. 19 LSU (8-2, 3-2 SEC) in enemy territory on Friday.
Ole Miss claimed the opening doubles point versus the Tigers and proceeded to win three singles matches, clinching a 4-0 victory. The Rebels earn their first ranked victory of the season. Ole Miss has defeated LSU in four of the last five meetings.
"We came up clutch at the end of doubles to grab that important point. We were able to carry that momentum into a lot of the singles matches and get three quick singles points to clinch the match. LSU has a great team, and beating them here in Baton Rouge is an impressive performance by our team," said Head Coach Mark Beyers.
Despite dropping the opening match of the contest at No. 1 doubles, the Rebels proceeded to claim the opening decision point. At No. 2 doubles, No. 44 Tereza Janatova and Anna Vrbenska defeated LSU's Maggie Cubitt and Safiya Carrington, 6-4. In similar fashion, Tiphanie Fiquet and Lillian Gabrielsen won 6-4 over LSU's Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley.
Three Ole Miss student-athletes earned dominant victories on Friday. Finishing first, Fiquet dominated No. 83 Carrington 6-0, 6-2. Fiquet improved to 6-1 in duals this season (3-0 SEC, 3-1 vs. ranked opponents). Vrbenska finished second, winning 6-2, 6-1 over LSU's Eden Richardson. Vrbenska has won three of her last four matches. No. 39 Sabina Machalova clinched the win for the Rebels, defeating No. 43 Bridges 6-2, 6-1.
