Ole Miss Ties a Program Record 18.0 Blocks

BATON ROUGE, La.— In the highly-contested series finale against the Tigers, Ole Miss came out on top in a five-set battle 3-2 Sunday from the Maravich Center for its first win of the season.

Ole Miss (1-13, 1-13 SEC) controlled the net against LSU (5-9, 5-9 SEC), totaling a season and program high 18.0 blocks. This tied the rally scoring era program record previously set in 2017. Five Rebels finished with double-digit kills, while Samantha Schnitta recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-high 18 digs. Gabby Easton added her first double-double of the year off of 52 assists and 15 digs.

After Ole Miss grabbed the first point of the match, LSU took off on a 5-0 run before a Rebel called timeout. The Rebs came out and responded with a 5-1 run of their own, with Sasha Ratliff adding two early kills. The Rebels capitalized off of Tiger errors to take an 11-8 lead and worked their way to a five-point advantage, 16-11. LSU battled back with strong kills from its outside hitters to pull within three at 21-18. Despite six total blocks from the Rebels in the set, an 8-1 scoring run allowed LSU to regain the lead and ultimately the set, 27-25.

Ratliff continued her strong presence at the net, adding her sixth kill of the day early in the second set to take command, 4-2. The Rebels led by as many as eight in the set, as it seemed to be all Ratliff as she added her sixth block of the day to boost the lead to four at 13-9. Back-to-back Rebel kills extended their lead to maintain control of the set at 21-12. Despite a late effort battle from LSU to stop seven straight set points and tie the set at 24 all, two straight kills from Bair halted the Tiger comeback for the Rebels to claim the set, 26-24.

In a back-and-forth third set with 11 ties, Ole Miss headed into the first media timeout with a one-point lead, 15-14,  off of a Schnitta kill. A 3-0 scoring run gave Ole Miss its largest lead of the set at 17-14. Ratliff's 10th kill of the day put the Rebels up by two at 20-18, before a quick Tiger run tied up the set at 21 all and then again at 24-24. LSU took the set 26-24 after it's 44th kill of the match, followed by its fifth service ace.

The Rebels got on the board early to begin the fourth set, due to Tiger errors, to take a 2-0 lead. Ole Miss added to its season-high block total with the team's 15th to go up 8-4. Leading by as many as six during the set, LSU attacking errors allowed the Rebels to go on a 3-0 run to lead 11-5. LSU responded with a 6-0 run to work its way back into the set and tie it up at 14 all. GG Carvacho stopped the Tiger run with her 10th kill of the day, as the Rebels went on a 3-1 run to take back the advantage 19-17. A 6-3 Rebel run utilized by Tiger errors helped Ole Miss take the set 25-20 to head to the fifth set for the fourth time this season.

Scoring the first point for the fifth straight set, the Rebels came out early with back-to-back kills to go up 4-2. LSU battled back to tie up the set at four all and then again at 6-6. Carvacho's 13th kill put Ole Miss up by one to assist in building a three-point lead, 10-7. LSU bounced back to score three straight to tie up the set for the sixth time at 11 all. The Rebels battled back with four kills, including back-to-back kills from Schnitta to seal the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Ole Miss continues their road stretch heading to South Carolina next weekend for a two-match series against the Gamecocks (March 6-7). Both matches will take place at 1 p.m. CT each day with TV to be announced later this week.
