Hoglund Strikes Out 14 as Baseball Beats ULM, 10-1
3/12/2021 | Baseball
Hoglund Logs Most Ks by a Rebel Pitcher Since Drew Pomeranz in 2010
OXFORD, Miss. — With Peyton Chatagnier back in the lineup and a dominant night on the mound, No. 3 Ole Miss baseball had few issues with the ULM Warhawks Friday evening, coming away with a 10-1 victory at Swayze Field.
Chatagnier picked up right where he left off and made his way above .500 on the season, going 3-for-4 at the plate along with Kevin Graham and Jacob Gonzalez. Tim Elko went 2-for-4 with five RBI, most of which coming from the first Ole Miss grand slam of the season.
After recently being assigned as the Friday starter on the mound, Gunnar Hoglund (2-0) went off in six innings of work, striking out 14 of 22 Warhawk batters while only giving up two hits and a walk all on 88 pitches. Hoglund's 14 strikeouts are the most by a Rebel pitcher since Drew Pomeranz fanned 15 twice in 2010. Braden Forsyth and Greer Holston carried Ole Miss the rest of the game out of the bullpen and giving up a combined two hits en route to a seventh straight win.
Hoglund got off to a good start on the mound and struck out three batters while only giving up a left field double by Andrew Beesley that landed just beyond the glove of Graham. In his first at-bat in two weeks, Chatagnier hit a leadoff single through the left side, followed by Justin Bench's right side single which immediately put runners at the corners with no outs. Following Cam Barlow's strikeout of Hayden Dunhurst and Chatagnier getting picked off, Elko scored Bench from second base thanks to an RBI double that gave Ole Miss an early 1-0 lead. Gonzalez hit a one-out single to center after Hoglund struck out three more Warhawk batters, but a double play ended the second inning abruptly.
Mason Holt snapped Hoglund's streak of six consecutive strikeouts with a two-out single up the middle in the third inning but was eventually left stranded following a groundout. The Rebels proceeded to quickly load the bases with no outs following a walk to Leatherwood, another Chatagnier single and Bench getting hit by pitch. Elko brought them all home with a grand slam, giving Ole Miss a 5-0 lead with one out in the inning.
The Rebels weren't done yet, as they extended their hit streak to four. Graham's single and Baker's ground-rule double put two more in scoring position. Gonzalez brought Graham home with an RBI single, extending the Ole Miss lead to 6-0 and bringing in Lucas Wepf out of the ULM bullpen. ULM prevented any more damage as a double play brought them to the fourth. After Hoglund again went 1-2-3 through the Warhark order, the Rebels tacked on another run with Hayden Leatherwood taking advantage of a ground out in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Wiley Cleland came aboard to begin the fifth inning due to a fielding error, but Hoglund struck out the following three batters, including his career-high tying 12th strikeout to retire the side. With one out, Kevin Graham blasted his third home run of the season to right center field to make it 8-0 Ole Miss. Wepf left Gonzalez and Ben Van Cleve stranded going into the sixth.
Hoglund left one Warhawk stranded to begin the sixth inning as Ole Miss got back to work offensively. Chatagnier got his third hit of the game with a leadoff single while Dunhurst brought them both home with a two-run bomb to right field and extended the Rebel lead to 10-0.
Forsyth succeeded Hoglund out of the bullpen to begin the seventh inning and used seven pitches to take care of the ULM order. Forsyth was replaced by Holston out of the Rebel bullpen after loading the bases in the eighth inning. Greer hit Justin King with a pitch, giving ULM its first run of the game, but it was far too late as the Rebels came away with the series-opening win.
The weekend series against ULM continues tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on SEC Network+ or listened to on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
